Creating your Path through Leadership

Okot Stephen (Uganda)

Stephenokot79@gmail.com

Below are some highlights from a recent assessment:

“Everything rises and falls on Leadership. Leadership truly develops from the inside out. If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you will be able to become the leader you want to be on the outside.”

This quote emphasizes the central role of leadership in the success or failure of any endeavor. This statement asserts that leadership is the key determinant of outcomes in various aspects of life, whether in organizations, communities, or society at large. It suggests that effective leadership is critical for driving progress, achieving goals, and overcoming challenges. The phrase that “Leadership truly develops from the inside out.” highlights the idea that genuine leadership begins with self-awareness, personal growth, and values-driven behavior. It implies that effective leaders cultivate inner qualities such as integrity, empathy, and vision, which serve as the foundation for their external leadership actions.

“If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you will be able to become the leader you want to be on the outside” emphasizes the importance of aligning internal values and character with external leadership behaviors. It suggests that authentic leadership stems from analogy between one’s inner convictions and outward actions.

“In every seeming adversity there is the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”

This statement emphasizes that even in situations that appear negative or challenging, there exists the potential for positive outcomes or opportunities. It encourages leaders to look beyond immediate setbacks and recognize the hidden potential for growth or improvement.

“Every challenge carries a gift.”

This phrase reinforces the idea that challenges are not merely problems to be overcome but also contain valuable lessons or benefits. It encourages individuals to approach difficulties with an open mind, seeking to extract meaningful insights or opportunities for development.

“One book can change a mind. One mind can change the world.”

The first part of this quote emphasizes the transformative power of education and knowledge acquisition. It suggests that a single book, with its ideas, insights, and perspectives, has the potential to profoundly influence an individual’s thinking and worldview. Reading can broaden perspectives, challenge beliefs, and spark new ideas, leading to personal growth and development. The second part of this quote underscores the ripple effect of individual transformation. When a person’s mindset shifts or evolves as a result of new knowledge or understanding, they may be inspired to take action and make a positive difference in the world. Whether through advocacy, innovation, leadership, or other means, a single individual has the potential to catalyze significant change and impact on a global scale.

“Leaders are readers and influence others only to the level of their own competence.”

This statement emphasizes the correlation between leadership effectiveness and the leader’s knowledge and skills. It suggests that leaders who are devoted readers and consistently seek to expand their knowledge base are better equipped to inspire and influence others. Additionally, it implies that leaders can only lead others effectively up to the extent of their own competence and expertise.

“You cannot lead people where you have not been.”

This statement underscores the importance of experiential knowledge and leading by example. Effective leadership often requires firsthand experience and understanding of the challenges and contexts encountered by those being led. Leaders who have navigated similar experiences are better positioned to empathize with and guide their followers.

What Have You Learned? How Have You Changed?

I started IIGL while in High school, finishing Level One and Two studies it has been very educative, informative and more so fun to study.  It has been like unleashing my potential in an earlier age, besides high school studies, I have gained skills for survival, I have learned on how to use my brain effectively and become a more better person in the society.

I am becoming more vibrant, conscious in every aspect of my life, and this has helped me to assist other youths in the society, many a times I have been given chances to speak with youths in positive behavior change, and how to gain more in the society by being focus and also be good ambassador in advocating a drug free society in youths. IIGL taught me the importance of flexibility in life that is why I changed my attitude, especially coming from  a slum it needs patience, courage and be resilience in order to overcome the odds, this is a place whereby you need skills for survival, it’s a den of all evil things, drug abuse is the order of the day, crime is not a big deal, dropping from school it is normal, but after getting the right people and mentor from IIGL, I changed my perspective and decided to be a better person, it is not a walk in the park to complete High school or primary level education in the slums, there are a lot of distractions, young girls below 15 years they are impregnated and also young boys as earlier as 13 years already are in criminal activities.

I learned to overcome the fear within and turn the invisible into visible. So many people are not living their dreams because they are living with fear, I know life will always try to make things difficult for me, especially in my case where even having a one day meal was an issue, but after joining IIGL I knew that fear will not build me but break my strength , I started facing my fears boldly and through that I found out that there was nothing to fear in the first place, fear of dropping from school not completing my studies, fear that we will be chased out of our house due to house rent, but I found out that the more I feared nothing worked out, fear will never solve our problems, as the saying goes what doesn’t kill you, strengthens you, through al I have undergone I speak boldly and even people do say that I am changed and very much brave and determined.

To the founder and Dean of studies/students I like to echo for giving us this platform to transform our lives positively.  These studies are a life changer.  It is a manual for a better life and a better society it speaks to our brains directly, to our health our soul and it is indeed a wonderful and noble course to take, through this studies it has made me a totally different person in terms of reason , in terms of our I see things and in terms of interaction, also it has given me knew friends whom we think critically and more so in a positive life transformation, knowledge shared is power shared, or this institution sharing the books, knowledge, time and mentorship is transformation of the universe. I understand we have young leaders who are doing better in the society making it a good place; that one person can change a community.  It is like when we plant a seed it sprouts to so many fruits that can feed a community.  It is the same with IIGL, the impact of IIGL is felt in different countries, that I know one day one time the world will come together through IIGL to have positive solutions to have a better world, a world for all nation.

I have also learned that respect and being thankful for everything is a virtue that should be uphold in the society, through respect you are respected back, people will see who you reciprocate before they reciprocate back, what goes round comes round, we need to embrace IIGL, for it is all the society needs for a better world. It cuts across all professionals without discrimination, we are all equal in IIGL, and that is why even the set-up is standard that even my old grandmother can understand the language without biasness. Long live IIGL and I look forward to learn more and more.

Make A Difference

Dream Team 22

Please join Dream Team 22 as our goal is to have 22 people contributing $22 per month.  We understand that money is energy and that to sustain and build IIGL we need a lot of people pouring their energy into this endeavor on a regular basis. We also know that not everyone can afford to commit $22 a month – especially our students, who live in countries with economies in which this amount can be equal to a weeks’ salary. So we are offering two options for those who wish to become a part of the Dream Team. One can commit to a $22 a month contribution or to spending 22 seconds each day holding the vision of IIGL becoming financially sustainable by the end of 2024!

Please join the Dream Team and help us create an energetic foundation to support the transformational work of IIGL! You can really make a difference in the world by making a modest contribution of time or money.  To make the $22 a month commitment or a one time donation, click the link below.  To become a member of the Dream Team 22 by committing 22 second a day to help us hold the vision, contact Deb for details:  drosen2@wi.rr.com
