Guest Editorial

On August 6, 2022 the IIGL celebrated the life of Lynne Murguia (AZ/USA), long time donor, Board Treasurer and Finance Chair. The following chapter was read by Kathleen Oweegon (USA/OR) during the celebration. This chapter was written by Lynne and is printed in the IIGL book, “Creating your Path through Leadership.”

While establishing Micro-Credit projects in developing countries, I came to realize that societal transformation depended on transforming leadership around the world. Thus when I was introduced to the International Institute for Global Leadership by a friend, it seemed like a personal invitation to a mutual mission. I began working with IIGL from its inception in 2002 and through the years have become acquainted with many of its students and their envisioned projects.

Such projects usually occur when a student is nearing graduation, although at times the core ideas will be shared sooner and then develop into magnificent realities*: farm training for the unemployed, high school training in leadership, entrepreneurial training for the poor, with many others in the preparatory stages.

The initiators of these projects are all graduates of IIGL, who have succeeded by applying its principles of heart-in-the-head responsibility, veracity and self-reliance, together with a powerful vision for a just, sustainable and equanimous society.

But the greatest gift has been what I have learned from the students, having read many of their assessments over the years and communicated with the authors. I have learned about their families, their dreams, their motivations, and am continually amazed by the quality of our future leaders and the world synthesis that occurs in connecting with each other.

Several personal relationships have developed with students which have facilitated assistance to Nepali earthquake victims, potential asylum of refugee students, assistance to ill students, etc. IIGL truly gives meaning to the realization of brother/sisterhood, and is a step toward recognition of the One Humanity.
he main idea that the writer is trying to convey in the book entitled “The Monk who Sold His Ferrari,” is that man has the power to decide the type or nature of life that he wants to live. Below are some highlights from the book:

Every event has a purpose and every setback its lesson. I have realized that failure, whether of the personal, professional, or even spiritual kind, is essential to personal expansion. It brings inner growth and a whole host of psychic rewards. Never regret your past. Rather, embrace it as the teacher that it is: Truthfully speaking, I have encountered several series of failures, setbacks, and disappointments and they taught me quite some lessons.

It used to be quite painful and bitter, until I began to understand that, everything I will encounter or have encountered has a lesson to teach me. I embraced the situations, learned the lessons therein, and became for much more enlightened and better individual. It got to the stage where I began serving as a means of encouragement and support to others in such situations. I have this friend, 2 friends actually, sisters that are twins. I got wind of words that their mother who I also consider a very close friend too had a ghastly accident and after some days, unfortunately, passed away. It was heart-rending because I had even promised my friend I would come over to the house to see her mum. The day I went there, a day after her mother’s death, both of them, herself and her sister, were disheveled/ disarray. Words couldn’t really do much then, because they had to grieve. I stayed with them for a while, offering some words of consolation. It was when I notified her that I was leaving that she realized I was even there. I kept in touch with them and encouraged them until from my judgment, they were able to resume their normal lives.

The moment you concentrate the focus of your mind on a singular purpose, extraordinary gifts will appear within your life: About a week exactly from today, I went out for a mission outreach alongside some of my church members in a different town from where we are resident.

Be patient and live with the knowledge that all you are searching for is certain to come if you prepare for it and expect it: Patience has never really been one of my best virtues, because most times, I believe once all research has been made and your mind is set on the line of action to take, you should get almost instant results after execution.

Sadly, I have come to discover that life doesn’t really work that way most of the time. That patience must be cultivated by me, I must allow the work of patience to be done in my life. And that singular knowledge has lifted a huge burden from my shoulder. The quest for seeing life as a race has ended. I have come to understand that I have my part to play and I am not in any competition with anyone. I am uniquely me and gifted with unique and varied talents from anyone else. If I have done my part, I need to apply patience and believe that it will come into manifestation. Currently, there are a lot of things that I am patiently, yes patiently waiting for to come to fulfillment in my life. In spite of the delays, I believe that at the right time, I will get them.

He who serves the most, reaps the most, emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. This is the way to inner peace and outer fulfillment: The greatest people on earth or that ever lived, had been those that gave their all for mankind, that served humanity with their best, talents, times, money, strength, intellect, and passion, the list is almost endless.

The more one gives in service to others, the more satisfaction and fulfillment one gets. I have experienced a great amount of joy and fulfillment after ministering to people, though I might have been exhausted after the whole process, knowing that I am offering services and imparting meaning to the lives of people is enough reward. Also, the testimonies afterward are encouraging. There is this joyful feeling I derive after offering help to others, whether it be monetary wise, wisdom wise, services, there is peace and fulfillment that resonates within me.

What I have Learned

It is with a deep sense of passion, self realization and worth that I write to discuss what I have learnt and how I have been transformed as a student of this institute. IIGL is an institute I can describe as transformational, magical and symbolic. The lessons there in are my daily companions. I can literally say that I feel a lot empowered and driven because of the lessons and ideas I have gathered so far from the books I have read. I will like to discuss what I have learnt under these broad highlights:

– Redefinition of Mindset: One book that has really re-engineered me to have a redefined self image, is PsychoCybernetics. It taught me how to use one of the greatest power I have; My mind power and to activate success from the inside out. I was born and raised in the rural parts of Kaduna, Northern Nigeria where you can tell that Education is not something the people cherish or desire. Only a few persons could speak and write in English fluently. Most of the people have an already established mindset of growing up, getting married and having children. No sense of ambition and self worth. I am glad that even while my environment was trying to have a strong influence on me, I refused to yield. I made sure I consistently stood out. My choice of books, association, interaction and lifestyle enlivened and redirected my steer in life.

My understanding of the power of the mind helped me fight mood swing and depressed state. I used to be very emotional and worry so much about what might not even happen. But when I read and understood that Mental Practice is as powerful as Actual practice, I resolved not to bug my head with negative thoughts but to build and develop positive mental attitude. So now, when I am tempted to feel down, moody and depressed, I just ask myself’ “What am I even doing to my self?” I have the power to reset my mood at every point. And this gets me enlivened high spirited.

– Improved Communication: My choice of words, communication pattern and level of interaction have greatly improved with what I have learnt especially from the book by Marshall Rosenberg; “NonViolent Communication.” I have consciously replaced some words that denotes negativity with some positive words, and as a teacher, I can tell that the application of this change has largely strengthened my teacher; student rapport. Words like “Don’t be late” have been replaced by “be punctual;” “Don’t make noise in class” to “pay rapt attention” and so on. I have also learned to understand people from their own perspective and this has largely helped me to tolerant people and be open to learn from them. So when I am tempted to think that someone is making no sense, I just sit back and pick what’s the lesson in there for me.

Attracting what I Most Desire: The Science of Attracting what I want holds true for me as I can see it evident in my life. I have learnt that I attract to my life whatever I give my attention , energy and focus to, whether positive or negative and that whatever I attract outward through my thoughts, feelings, mental pictures and words, I attract into my life.

This statement was indeed evident in my life especially in my marriage. When I was single, one thing I dreaded was getting into the wrong marriage . My thoughts attracted the right person to me and I couldn’t have asked for another. I never really felt the power of my attractive force until my father revealed that he knows the kind of man I will love to marry. I was surprised as to how people can as well feel our thoughts and desires. Another friend told me about a young man that spoke to him about the possibility of getting into a relationship with me and my friend in his words said to me; “Patricia, I know your kind of person and I can tell that you wouldn’t want to end up with that kind of person considering his personality and his kind of business.” I can boldly say that even the universe aligned with my desires.

(Patricia is a Level Three student and this is an excerpt from her Testimonial for Level Three).

This will enable them to become active change agents and community leaders! I believe that every girl, regardless of who she is or where she comes from, has the potential to make a significant difference in the world. A girl child must be mentored and taught proper values in order to improve her self worth.” Felix is the author of a few books, including Goal Mapping. Make A Difference
Dream Team 22
Please join Dream Team 22 as our goal is to have 22 people contributing $22 per month. We understand that money is energy and that to sustain and build IIGL we need a lot of people pouring their energy into this endeavor on a regular basis. We also know that not everyone can afford to commit $22 a month – especially our students, who live in countries with economies in which this amount can be equal to a weeks’ salary. So we are offering two options for those who wish to become a part of the Dream Team. One can commit to a $22 a month contribution or to spending 22 seconds each day holding the vision of IIGL becoming financially sustainable by the end of 2021!

Please join the Dream Team and help us create an energetic foundation to support the transformational work of IIGL! You can really make a difference in the world by making a modest contribution of time or money. To make the $22 a month commitment or a one time donation, click the link below.
