Talla Simo Valerie Rostan – Assessments

As A Man Thinketh

Assessment by Talla Simo Valerie Rostan (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The main idea the author is trying to bring out is that; a man is literally what he thinks. Man is the master of his thoughts, the molder of his character and the shaper of his life. What ever he does comes back to what he had previously thought of, therefore he is the sharper of his destiny and life.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

The seven ideas which were personally most important to me and why are:

i. Thought and Character

This tells us that man is literally what he thinks and he conceived in his mind. A man is the Lord of his thoughts. He holds the key to every situation and contains the transforming and regenerative agency by making himself the way he wills. Our character holds strong in our behavior and attitude. On a personal note, my thoughts at times sometimes ways on my character mostly especially when have a friend and I know he or she is a bad friend or liar. My character approach towards him or her will obviously change.

ii. Effects of Thoughts on Circumstances

A mans thoughts has a great effects on the circumstances that surrounds. Our minds are like gardens which when cultivated badly or sowed bad seeds will produce bad fruits. Our thoughts always fit our situations meaning whatever we intend to do have been ever long conceived in the hearts. I get to understand that not whatever a man prays for is what he gets, but he do gets what he justly earns. His wishes and prayers are gratified and answered when they are harmonious with is thoughts and actions. In most cases, I can’t expect to excel in my daily task without haven’t planned so well for it. My thoughts have always been geared to actions that why I always realize my daily tasked.

iii. Effects of Thoughts on Health and Body

Despite that we own our body; our body is a servant of our mind. It acts on what we think. Once a man thinks that he can run a race and emerge as first, his body act to that and do what ever it will take to emerge first. A sickly thought will give rise to a sick body. There are time that I may feel like I’m not feeling too well but when I know what I need to be strong and have things to do, I body becomes energize and be strong again.

iv. Thoughts and Purpose

Until our thought is linked with purpose, there is no intelligent accomplishment. We can think of the greatest things to do or to accomplish but when those things do not have a focus, put away weakness and enter into those who thing strong and recognize failures as pathway to attainment, then our thought is useless. One should always think of something right and see how to accomplish it.

v. The Thought Factor – In Achievement

The central point of man’s achievements or failures lies in his thoughts. A man can only rise, conquer and achieve by lifting up his thoughts and vice versa. A man whose first thought is not obvious of what he want, he will fail. Our thoughts must be very high and seen as something which can never be changed.

vi. Visions and Ideals

Vision is the first step of any achievement or project or an idea. A man’s vision and ideals sets his path way to success. That has been the case with great people of today’s world. A man needs to be visionary to see clearly and achieve his objectives.

vii. Serenity

A calm and peace heart, mind or atmosphere brings out an extra power from us. Calmness of mind is seen as the most beautiful jewels of wisdom. He that is calm understand better, listen more which is one the great features of a leader, to listen more and talk less. In my case, serenity brings out the best in me. Knowing that I have sometime to be alone, it gives me enough time to pounder on my visions and way of life. It is only in calm moment that I can better evaluate myself and gain fresh new ideas.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

These ideas and lessons will help me in a great to handle things not just from the obvious but to really understand circumstances surrounding them. It will also help me to be more positive and thoughts because they turn to become of who we really are. It has also thought on how to be purposeful in life vision and goals have. Finally, ones achievements in life result from what he/she thinks or have as thoughts. Therefore I need to aim high and think positively and be determined to succeed.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“He that seeketh, findeth and to him that knocks the door shall be opened.”

This so to me because what I always put is what I get. Relating to my goals and objectives, if I put extra energy or make necessary findings on how to do something which I don’t know so well, I get a good result but if I try to do it alone, I see myself not able to go through.

“Out of clean hearts comes a clean life and clean body.”

Once ones’ heart or dealing are pure in life, you will get a good outcome. So is our spiritual life too.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Assessment by Talla Simo Valerie Rostan (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The main idea the author is trying to bring out is that; each and one of us have our different ways we see things and do things. Also, we each have our different talents and we are unique. It can take long for us to discover who really we are as per what we can do but it never to late to be who really you are. It takes just courage, determination and faith in you.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

The seven ideas which were personally most important to me and why are:

i. Fear

This stands as one of the greatest barriers to one’s achievement or on the ladder to success. Once fear steps in, failure and limitations steps. The seagull portray fear in the daily activities that why they could never sea flying as something important, what was more important to them was their food ant not flying. I fear the word fear but I always try to put it behind me and move ahead, knowing that I can make it

ii. Courage and Determination

One the contrary, what break the barrier of fear is just how courageous and determine you are t go through your activities or set goal. Jonathan proved this when he started fly and not only at that but to greater heights and high speed. This is the case with me, I ever lest myself be limited to my success. Always stay focus and always remind myself of what I have to do.

iii. Perseverance

Nothing good comes easy. A good work needs a lot of patience and efforts It took Jonathan tremendous strength and effort to set a world speed record for seagulls. That’s what it takes to be the best in any domains you find yourself in. I have always reap the reward of perseverance, from my job to my way of life

iv. Think New/Discovery

The quest to learn something new always or bring in something new always set the paste for a new idea or discovery to be born. That was the case of the seagull. He had wanted to get to the extra ordinary. Always wanted to know why seagull could not fly, but this let him to discover that they could and changed the belief of others. I see this very important because, the core beginning of a great leader start with quest to get something new. That’s what makes the different between those make things happened to those who just watch things happened. I strive as much as possible to make things happened no matter how difficult it seem, but I can will sail through.

v. Faith, Believe and Action

All these three works together, once you have the faith that you can do anything you want to do, then you will certainly do it. And this faith is completed. Always believe in yourself. Jonathan believed so much on what he could do and he did it.

vi. Kindness and love

This is the central point of true happiness. Once these two values exist in your life, you see the truth. But when love cannot portray itself, we tend to see anger. It is impossible to laugh at the same time when you are angry. Anger and laughter are mutually exclusive and you have the power to choose either. When you can manager you anger, you will produce positive changes so did the seagulls did.

vii. Positive Mindset

Be optimist in all your endeavors. Jonathan showed this features through his story and also helped the others seagull to be positive minded. They never believe they could fly, but with a positive mindset, they could to fly and they enjoyed it. Positive mindset keeps me going. I never think negative of myself. Even if the negative wants to set in, I empower myself with a positive thought. It keeps me going.

Therefore I need to aim high and think positively and be determining to succeed.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

The quotes that were most important to me are:

“The gull sees farthest who flies highest.”

To get the best you must work hard and you must go further, even if it means more challenge.

“We choose our next world through what we learn in this one.”

This clearly tells us that our tomorrow depends how we leave our lives today. If you leave a good life then expect good from others and if you leave a bad life, then expect the worst. But we can always make a change if our life has been worse. It’s worth it to try and change for the best.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

No, I understood everything that was in the book.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

Keys to Success

Assessment by Talla Simo Valerie Rostan (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The author of this book conveys the message of Success; the steps to success. The 17 principles of success depict what it takes for one to be successful. They are principles that will spur your efforts, steel your strength and make your dream comes true.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. Definiteness of purpose

The first step to know what you want. Defining your objectives and knowing where you are going. It doesn’t matter how you start, just place a good foundation when you begin. Having a definite purpose in life goes by saying that if you” do not know where you are coming from, you will never know whether you have you have arrived”. On a personal note, before setting myself into any task, I always set my objectives, which gives me proper direction. On daily bases I also set my plan of activities for the day so as to be more productive and resourceful.

ii. Faith

Faith happens to be one of the values which stand as the back borne behind our success. Faith induces action. Faith without action is dead. We need to apply faith in daily activities or whatever we find ourselves. There is a saying “Faith can move mountains” these is very evident and greatest faith comes from God first then in yourself and finally others. Take the story of a very old donkey who felt into a dried well and his master decided to bury it there since it was already of age. Calling all the villagers to help filled the well with ground, each time the ground landed on the donkey, he just shake if off and climbed on and surprisingly the donkey was found out of the well. Just have faith that what ever situation you are in at the moment there is something brighter coming your way. Personally, faith is that which spurs me up when I think I m about to crash. It gives me an extra force never to give up.

iii. Discipline

I define PHD as prayer, hard work and Discipline. Discipline comes last, which therefore means that if you are prayerful and very hard working but not discipline, then be ready to loose everything. Beginning fro your thoughts, words and actions, once you are discipline you will definitely have a big reward for it which is success. Personally; discipline is one of the factors which I hold in high esteem. That can be seen vividly in my actions, thoughts and words. Though there are sometimes which one tries to fall prey to indiscipline to certain issues, but the word discipline suffices all.

iv. Teamwork

Teamwork is very important and vital to the growth of any organization, group or individual. Certainly no man is an island; therefore we need each others strength and efforts to succeed. The body got several parts which makes it a whole body. Teamwork unites people from different background and cultures, which they all turn to produce wonderful results. As the work TEAM goes Together, Everyone, Achieves, More.

v. Defeat and adversity

Life is not a bed of roses. We should always expect the unexpected. Having in mind that these situations do occur, the important thing to do is learn how to manage the adversity and defeat which comes our way. When been faced with defeat and adversity, we should look at them as blessings, for it would have been worst than now. Personally, I was suppose to attend a meeting a day of which I am the president of the group. I was so shocked to see only 5 persons of a total of 30 and more been present for the meeting. I felt so disappointed at the start, but I was been stroke by a strange feeling not to give up, to continue the fight and to my greatest dismay, the meeting so far has been excellent, members do attended and everything Is moving on smoothly.

vi. Vision

One of the greatest gifts we have is the gift of creativity. We are all genius. It takes just a small push ahead to discover our vision and goals in life. We most understand that we all are special and unique. For we cannot know everything but we can be best in doing one thing. We need to be visionary. People who see beyond with no limits. We need to learn to come up with new ideas to help build the society in which we live. Great leaders have vision and they do not hide from their followers. This is particular with me in the way is see things. I turn to look beyond the present. And it has helped me to be very industrious, committed and objective.

vii. Time

Time is very important and once lost, it can never be gotten or regain. It set the paste for you to achieve your goals, a proper planning and organization. Once you have a proper time management schedule, then all will definitely of on smoothly. Time is money and it’s very precious. I personally draw up my time schedule to properly achieve my set objectives and on time.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

The ideas or lessons put across will be great importance to me. The ideas learned are been practice by everyday so as to keep abreast with changes of life. It will also assist me to share with others, those do not have he privilege to learn what I have learnt most especially the program I am currently working which is focus youth development.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“Success attracts success and failures attracts more failure.”

This is evident in that, when you surround yourself with people who are successful or your thoughts with positive thinking, the reward will be success because it will spur you to work. This also goes with he persons we choose as friends. If you go about making friends who are negative thinkers you may always seem to remain negative. Choose person who are positive in life. Network with best people you can ever think of for it shall be more of a blessing to you than a curse.

“Wasting time is sinful”

Some of have not really the purpose for which were created or born. Time is money, the more we spend time the more we let others not getting what they want. Timing is paramount to anybody most especially as a leader. Time should be a very important instruments for us, if we set an activity to start at a particular, everyone is present then the it takes two or more hours later for the activity begin. This really bad and morally incorrect. We must learn to respect time.

“Never let a day go by without thinking about your future plan.”

It very important to always take out time each day and evaluate oneself with respect you to dreams or goals. This means of evaluation or thinking moment helps you see how far you have gone and what is expected of you to reach where you want to be. It is most like that most people just wake deal with today has to offer. Others don’t even know what they want. While others are completely lost. The truth is for us to succeed in this present life we must know where we are going, and work o the various steps to take us there if not will be lost or fail in all. We need to think dynamically and act on our plans.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

No.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

Yes. The exercises where very helpful because helped me review myself and evaluated. It also placed with the choice of getting into so commitments.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment.

No.

Please rate the following questions on a scale from 1 to 10. Ten is good and one is poor.

A. How interesting was it to read? 10
B. How helpful were the contents? 10
C. How easy was it to understand? 10

Psycho-Cybernetics 2000

Assessment by Talla Simo Valerie Rostan (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The author main idea is to see how better we can better achieve success despite the adversity we face in life. He also tries to put across the human self as the center of all what we want. We can be healthier so long as our thoughts are pure. We can become who we want to be as long as we develop the right mindset, set our goals and achieve them.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. Goals

Goals and /or objectives define our purpose in life/work. It defined what we want to achieve in each domain of our lives. Without goals we are like sheep without shepherd. I often set my goals with respect to my job, education and mostly my spiritual life.

ii. Fear

Fear is the worst enemy a man can keep or feel about. Fear is one aspect which limits people from achieving their set adjectives. People either fear to succeed or fear to fail. We fear to succeed when been faced with a promotion either in our workplace or our present task. We are scared to not succeed. We feel if we don’t succeed people will laugh at us. On the other hand, people fear to fail because we think people will ridicule us if we don’t make it. Most of all fear is the fear of Death. Personally I do fear the unknown, but I don’t make it be paramount to my thinking or way of acting. I try as much as possible to counter fear and think positive.

iii. Self Image

Our self image represents who we are, how we are and what we take ourselves to be. People do have their different ways in which they do see us. We must understand that no matter what we feel of ourselves, people will keep looking up to you. They will either appreciate you or despise you. It is therefore important the way we carry ourselves outside. I have been trying on a personal note to try and maintain a distinct self-image. What people if not all some could appreciate you.

iv. Change

By change I mean positive change; changing from bad habits to good habits, from a negative mindset to a positive mindset. If we want to move ahead, we must always accept change to be part of our lives, if not we will be doomed. Another aspect of is that, Change is one thing which is inevitable in one’s life. So one most always accept change as it come; a positive and not a negative change. This is particular in my own situation whereby, leaving what I was previously doing as my job and where I was, took me sometime to adapt to my present state and job. I can’t regret the where I am at the moment, but hope for greater things.

v. Self Acceptance

We must learn to accept who we are despite the insults from others or the way people see us to be. We must know our worth. Let no one make you feel inferior. One thing which that is certain with most of us is that, we don’t like accepting our mistakes and using them as steeping stones to success, we tend to internalize ourselves by our mistakes. On a personal note, it use be difficult some times for me to accept that I was along or I can’t be what I want or do what I want, but not too long, I discovered that there are some situations that I should let go and move ahead.

vi. Choices

Choices are inevitable in life most especially with trend of the 21st Century. There are multiple paths to choose from irrespective of our career, our studies and the way of living. What matters is how we make those choices and which choice is actually the best for the time been. Most importantly we should not feel discourage with our present situation or predicament. We do have choices. No one should make you feel inferior. We should not be tired down just to one aspect in life.

vii. Confidence

No matter how hard and tirelessly you work, if you don’t have confidence in yourself, you will always fall and feel unfulfilled. We are the main persons to motivate ourselves each time you feel defeated. You watched word should be “I will succeed”. Most often we always find ourselves giving up at the verge of achieving our objectives. Confidence keeps you up there. No matter the mockery from others. I main maintain self confidence in whatever am into. It keeps me going and moving to greater height.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

The ideas or lessons put across will be great importance to me. The ideas learned are been practice by everyday so as to keep abreast with changes of life. It will also assist me to share to others, those do not have he privilege to learn what I have learnt most especially the program I am currently working which is focus youth development. Finally, the ideas will help improve on daily activities. More especially building a mature sense of direction and thinking

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“The most miserable and tortured people in the world are those who are continually straining and striving to convince themselves and others that they are something others than what basically they are.”

The words of Maltz are very true; we often want to please people, we often give a different picture of ourselves. In the end when we caught or discovered of not been the people we claim to be, we feel disappointed, ashamed and very frustrated. We should learn to accept ourselves from there shall always be higher or lower person than yourself.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can change, the wisdom to know the difference.”

Wisdom prevails than any other gift from God. Once we are filled with wisdom, we further learn to know to deal with complex situations.

Not really anything that was unclear.

Success through a Positive Mental Attitude

Assessment by Talla Simo Valerie Rostan (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The main idea the author is trying to convey here is that, we can do anything so long as we think positively. Our minds forms and sets out action. If we think positively, we achieve whatever we want in life.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. Daring

No Risk no reward and the more the risk the more the reward. Knowing that I posses the power to do more and exploring the power of my mind, I have come to achieve so many things just for this short while. For example, I have been thing to organize a seminar with students of some secondary schools around my community, but it was not easy to go about it, always seen it as something difficult. But I dared to organize the seminar and behold it was successful and much appreciated by the students and the school administration.

ii. Motivation

Motivation stands as a driving for to what one has to achieve or accomplish. Motivation stands as a daily fuel in my road to success. Motivation either comes from you or from another person, in all it should induce action or help you determine your choice. For example I am personally induces to work hard when I am been appraised positively for a job well done and when corrected if I went wrong in accomplishing a task. This applies to my personal life as well. Given myself the faith and confidence in whatever I find myself in, makes me rise above any obstacle I find o my way.

iii. Getting things done

Greatness is achieved by people who instill discipline and self control in their way of leaving. Procrastination is the mother to all failures and it is very bad. If you want to achieve anything, do it now don’t wait still tomorrow. Use yourself as a self motivator, a self starter. For example, I didn’t wait others to tell to join IIGL when I first knew about it, I quick decided to so and I m reaping all the benefit it has to offer.

iv. Shortcut

Each and every one of knows the way that will lead us to our success stories. Some may go through the normal and will get to the end. Others will follow a shortcut and get to the end. But what matters here is how our thoughts were based. People can kill and do more dangerous things to get wealth or riches. While another will toil the soil and work hard to get wealth. When you think with a positive mental attitude you can attain riches and wealth despite the path you take.

v. The more you give that which is desirable and good, the more you get.

The principle set a clear base as the scripture says; blessed are those who give than those who receive. There is joy in given than in receiving. Each time I always give out something or share with another I receive a hundred fold. Not only money or material things but idea, knowledge and positive words to others which get them moving and are encouraged.

vi. Satisfaction and happiness

I learned that the only way you can derived satisfaction in whatever you are doing, is to have a positive mental attitude. As well as your happiness which you own. Make yourself happy each moment of your life and you will see how all other things will work well for you. No man has the right to make you feel inferior. After reading this book I always retain the phrase “day by day in every way I am getting better and better. I always affirm myself and thought what I want and al these keeps me happy and satisfied despite the obstacle I face every day.

vii. Change

Change is one thing which is inevitable in one’s life. So one most always accept change as it come; a positive and not a negative change. This is particular in my own situation whereby, leaving what I was previously doing as my job and where I was, took me sometime to adapt to my present state and job. I can’t regret the where I am at the moment, but hope for greater things.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

The ideas or lessons put across will be great importance to me. The ideas learned are been practice by everyday so as to keep abreast with changes of life. It will also assist me to share the to others, those do not have he privilege to learn what I have learnt most especially the program I am currently working which is focus youth development. Finally helped to improve on daily activities. More especially building a mature sense of direction and thinking.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“Exemplification of true faith consists of acts of kindness and love for ones fellowmen. Not just formal prayers uttered by life.”

“We should act what we preach. Love one another. This necessary doesn’t come from prayers or money, but from our gentle ways, we should learn to show act of kindness to our fellow brothers and sisters, love should lead from all angles of our life. The prayer fortifies what we believe and show to one another.

“Sow an action and you will reap a habit; sow a habit and you will reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.”

This quote guide us in the way we so our things. If we come up with negativity or bad ideas, they will turn to grow in us and we shall forever remain a negative thinker. Likewise our actions. This quote spurs us to remain positive and doer of good things, for if we keep doing good and stay positive, it shall forever remain in us. That no man can ever take from us.

“Greatness comes to those who develop a burning desire to achieve higher goals.”

This is so true to me in that once your mind has been set up to achieve a particular task, you can do it. Some people turn to choose lower level of achievements others like big post. They are achievements based on the individual’s objective. Aiming high complemented with desire and commitment, you can become what ever you want to be.

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve it.”

The mind is so strong that most or all of our actions have been conceived by the mind. What happen is we; let ourselves been deceived that we can be the persons or people we want to become. Think positive and act, then you achieve. This also goes to the adverse situation or circumstances we find ourselves in. husband cheat on their wives, because they want to like wise women. If we think how to be truthful and be strong with our mindset, then we will be doing a lot good than harm to ourselves and to others.

“Day by Day in every aspect, I am getting better.”

This statement is so strong and positive affirmation to oneself. Most often we turn to condemn ourselves or we don’t see what benefit life to offer. Furthermore, we don’t believe we can change. But when we start realizing that we are greater and better than whom we use to be, we shall then see the importance of change. We should learn to appreciate ourselves and be thankful to God Almighty. Tell yourself all the best things you can ever imagine, God will help see you through your difficulties and you shall become a better person.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?
