Saliu G. Olaniyi – Assessments

As a Man Thinketh

Assessment by Saliu Olaniyi (Nigeria)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The author expressed in the book the importance of a man’s thought, a man is what he thinks how our conditions and circumstances are shaped by our thought. A man is the maker of himself by the virtue of the thought he chose. He likened the mind to a field (garden), it is either cultivated with good seed or allowed to run wild, and that a man can master his mind by monitoring what he dwells on in his mind. A man’s mind is just like a mine, not until its dug, and with patience can its good be extracted. The thought of a man is made known through his character and it all have effect on himself, others, life and circumstances. It was further emphasized that the mind is a master over the body; a pure thought brings about a healthy body.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

The seven ideas include:

A. Man is made or unmade by himself.

A man’s thought becomes a store house where weapons of destruction or building up are kept. A man gain either good or bad from his thought. A wrong thought will bring a wrong fruit, if I let my mind dwells on bad thinking, that means am sowing thorns and tares on my garden and which will in turn bring about harvest of destruction, negative circumstances and conditions which will definitely result in bad character. Either consciously or unconsciously, my behavior are as a result of my thought, the words of my mouth and my action are result of what I have sown in the field of my mind.

B. Thought and Character are one.

The word as man thinks so is he tells much about our character is joined to thought. Focusing on the outside condition can be frustrating, but a knowing that thought harmonized with character enables man to see his circumstances differently. An altered mind results in a altered character either negatively or positively. Every thought seed sown, or allowed in the mind will produce its own fruit. Good seed equals good fruits and bad seed equals bad fruits. No character is formed on its own but is preceded by a thought that have been dwelt on overtime. So an unwanted character can only be dealt with by uprooting the seed that birthed it in the mind. (Renewed thinking).

C. Effect of thoughts on health and body.

Our thought makes a self-made place for us. The body responds to the thought that fills our mind. The bible said and I quote, if you are cheerful, you feel good; if you are sad, you hurt all over. (Proverbs 17:22, CEV). Unclean thought forms unhealthy habit, only through the guarding of the heart can the body be kept in good vigour. The mind is the source of life, so once there is impurity at the source, the all will be impure.

D. Thought and purpose.

The mind being the source of a good life, can only be utilized to accomplish a purpose if such purpose is backed with thought. The accomplishment of a purpose can be backed with mind filled with devoted thought towards its attainment, not wandering away in imaginations. No matter the insignificance of a task is to a purpose, the mind should be focused on it. The mind should be used to create a mental picture of the path to accomplish it, the presence of doubt or fear does not mean it is unachievable, but allying thought to purpose forms a creative force of mental powers that keeps draws the to be accomplished purpose nearer than doubt and fear makes it look to appear.

E. Achievement and Thought.

Much can be achieve once a man can think right. If you think u can then you can, and if you think you can’t then you cant. A become what he thinks and remains what he continues to think of. So whatsoever a man is own and not another person’s, anything a man achieve or fails to achieve directly results from the thought. The level to which a man can rise cannot exceed his thought level; all achievements are governed by one law which is thought.

F. Thoughts and ideals.

This sums up how thought and purpose aligned. Only those who travel within their mind, not seeing the process, but go through it and only perceive the result. As a man fixes is eyes on the ideal, and dream of it, channeled is thought towards it, it becomes achievable.

G. Serenity

Serenity, a character that flows as a result of long and patient effort in self-control. It shows the operation of thought. People are attracted to calmness and found calm person approachable.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

The lessons of this book have opened my eyes to the fact that I am a product of my thought. Never let doubt or fear makes u submit to circumstances, but with a positive mind, face fear, seek knowledge to overcome. I see that what I am today is what I have been in my mind, and I can be better if only I can change the way I think. In my personal life I stop seeing the negative situation around me or which my environment posed, but I approach life daily with positive thinking.

The world can be a better place if we all her inhabitants will think right, since our right seed of thought contributes to our character which is the basis of our relationship with one another. Whatever a man sows he will reap, so if I sow good thought, I will definitely reap his good fruits; whatsoever thought I think, ends up becoming my character and they form my habits.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“The body is the servant of the mind.”

To me this word sounds powerful, I can interpret it as if I can cultivate healthy behaviors, and think healthy thought then I can live healthy and be free from sickness, it reminds me of divine healing principle. I can control my body with my mind by thinking good thought and thus refrain my body from any unlawful use.

“Man is always a master.”

A thought of this word strike a note within me that I can become anything good I can become. I was discussing this with a friend that the best we hoping for will soon manifest if only we can keep the good thought in our mind, also that if we keep thinking of it, then it has started within us.

“Man is the maker of his character liking the mind to a field of treasure which require searching and mining to get the treasure beneath.”

This shows me that I don’t have to be lazy in thinking or be a lazy thinker. If any of my character is not pleasing then I will have to do the work of myself to change it.

“Every man is where he is by the law of his being.”

This quote put an end to a question that have been in my mind over a long time, I use to wonder why two or more people in the same situation (probably bad situation) react differently especially maybe one is reacting positively. Now I see that some react against it why some are contend with it and some sees their life as a product of an internal thought more than outer conditions. If I learn to control circumstances with my thought then my character will be good.

“The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.”

When a man is free his mind disturbance or anxiety, it helps him to think good thought which will in turn brings about good.

“The law of harvest is to reap more than you sow. Sow an act, and you reap a habit. Sow a habit and you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny.”

Just like a seed of orange will not produce a seed but a tree and many other orange fruits, so also is the though from our mind.

“There can be no progress nor achievement without sacrifice, and a man’s worldly success will be by the measure that he sacrifices his confused animal thoughts, and fixes his mind on the development of his plans, and the strengthening of his resolution and self-reliance.”

For one to overcome the habit of bad thought or record success, the mind has to be engage in good thinking, give up every bad thought and sow good seed.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Assessment by Saliu Olaniyi (Nigeria)

The author’s main idea is conquering the unknown. Discovering one true hidden treasure, ability, talent that seems to have been locked up through nature, that appears to be only and the true form of existing. Breaking of environmental circumstance that does not brings progress or way of living that one has come to accept from ancestors that does not actually supply wisdom or freedom from a useless life. There is no harm in trying something different, but might be denying oneself of the good possibilities that comes from trying. Trusting oneself, even when all men doubt you, standing in the face of fear and look within.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

A. Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding.

This tells me that our physical eyes only see the physical, but it is in our mind that we see the clear picture of what we aspire for.

B. If our friendship depends on things like space and time, then when we finally overcome space and time, we’ve destroyed our own brotherhood! But overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don’t you think that we might see each other once or twice?

This idea shows we should not wait for time but maximize every little time and opportunity that shows up.

C. Trust yourself.

This idea personally means that you have to trust yourself, even if all men shows doubt, and also make allowance for their doubt. There is certainly some fear in starting to become the person one is born to be. I should trust your ability, potentials, and your findings, though there would be opposition.

Jonathan was so tenacious that his quest opened his understanding, even got him into another world. Diligence is a virtue that I must possess in order to discover my real self, diligence in practice, diligence in hard work.

Jonathan even after reaching some height, still further to attain more height in flight. No matter what I have achieved, no matter the height obtained, I should still press forward, work harder and create new opportunity. Jonathan quest for perfection made him to even come across the real meaning of perfection when he met the wisest gull in the other world.

No ulterior motive to be supreme or placed above any other in the flock, but just want to share his findings.

Jonathan discovered a new life, he figured out a good place to dine, a way to long life, a way out of early death which he figured out that to be boredom fear and anger. Jonathan was able to receive the help of the gods. He sees himself that he is a perfect unlimited gull. He got to know who he is, that he is a born instructor. He was ready to share his new discoveries with as many gulls that are ready to learn.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

These ideas are very helpful in that it will make me cultivate helpful thinking. To start with, Trust, I trust myself and as well look critically into the critics of others about me, not measuring myself with what they say, but seeing if actually they are right and adjusting myself to become good. Looking deeply in to the mind and picturing myself as a perfect person. Secondly, from Jonathan quest, I see that he was able to discover himself and what he was born to be. Similarly if I have found myself, I should not make it my own affairs alone, but see to it that I help others with my findings, making them to see that there is a real self in the inside that need to be manifested. Show love to the world, forgive all wrong that I might have experience and work in love. I should keep following after my pursuit and contribute to others to do likewise too. If a world could be that everyone would love to be at his or herself, then it would be a world that individual will start looking towards solving a problem that has been, how to overcome it and live in perfection.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“The gulls who scorn perfection for the sake of travel go nowhere, slowly. Those who put aside travel for the sake of perfection go anywhere, instantly.”

This sound like to attain a goal, you have to be ready for what it takes. Fix your mind on the gain and not price to be paid.

“Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.”

Our point of reference should not just be what we see, but what we know. Our eyes only know what it sees but our mind is the seat of knowledge.

“You don’t love hatred and evil, of course. You have to practice and see the real gull, the good in every one of them, and to help them see it in themselves. That’s what I mean by love.”

“Why, Jon, why? his mother asked. Why is it so hard to be like the rest of the flock, Jon? Why can’t you leave low flying to the pelicans, the alhatross? Why don’t you eat? Son, you’re bone and feathers! I don’t mind being bone and feathers mom. I just want to know what I can do in the air and what I can’t, that’s all. I just want to know.”

I will just comment on this that many a times that we listen or take counsel we should be careful they are not negative ones that will make us get weary or discourages us from following our pursuit.

“As he sank low in the water, a strange hollow voice sounded within him. There’s no way around it. I am a seagull. I am limited by nature. If I were meant to learn so much about flying, I’d have charts for brains. If I were meant to fly at speed I’d have falcon’s short wings, and live on mice instead of fish. My father was right. I must forget this foolishness. I must fly home to the Flock and be content as I am, as a poor limited seagull.”

Doubt, fear and failure have to be seen as an opportunity and not as the final result. One should not ascribe his or her failure to what or what is not, (sex, gender, color, or origin.) never compare yourself to others or view yourself only as others ass viewed you.

“Jonathan sighed. The price of being misunderstood, he thought. They call you devil or they call you god.”

When people around us cannot understand our goal, or see what we are seeing we can be called several names or seen as a misfortune, but we should strive to attain as we desire in our good heart.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

I don’t understand these words;“You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you touch perfect speed. And that isn’t flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit and perfection doesn’t have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.” I didn’t disagree with this statement, but I want more understanding of the statement.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

The book though within is content contains no exercise but its words are helpful. It has exercise on the mind, motivating me to discover my real self, trust myself and see beyond what my eyes can only see but look deeply within me and make pursiut of excellence.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment.

Keys to Success

Assessment by Saliu Olaniyi (Nigeria)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The keys to personal achievement, and implementation of the principles of success.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. The first idea I will like to mention her is the definiteness of purpose.

This word struck a chord in me. It was said that wishes for better things is not just enough, but having a purpose and just a purpose but a definite one and having a plan of achieving such goals. Having all my minds fixed on what is it I want to achieve. Having has a lot of advantage which includes; faith, alertness to opportunity etc. it is the consciousness of success, it keeps the mind awake to the fact that success is a must and can be achieve. The secret to success first lies in knowing what I want.

This was said to be attached to a mental attitude that. Doing more than what you are paid for, doing it better than you have ever done it. I so much like this aspect it teaches me that I should not just work for what I am paid for. As at the time of reading this book, I was actually working in place where some of my colleagues have given me a orientation that I should not let the employer give me extra work, and that I should handle the work with levity since they are not treating us well, but I have always fight with this in me, I will just say reading this book at this time is a big help. Doing extra attracts favor and if I may add it is favor either from God or man that most of us human seeks. Do something that people cannot repay you in cash or kind is one of the words from Shiv Khera in his book you can win, this he said can help build a good attitude.

iii. Applied Faith.

The art of believing by doing. Faith is action. Believing in your purpose should make you act. A believe in the opportunities that lies around and in infinite intelligence. Seeing with the eye of faith is seeing with the eye of imagination and seeing it mentally. This should make to act on my purpose. I should bring my mind to believe in what my purpose is, not focusing on my limitation or even impose limitation on myself. Setting my mind over any kind of fear.

Two or more minds working together in the spirit of perfect harmony. Associating with other people who can motivate, advice, counsel or cooperate with you in achieving a goal. People with success oriented mind. The master mind alliance can be appropriate in any areas of life; it makes me accountable to myself and helps to strive for the best. People who can challenge me to achieve success or who can join mind with me to achieve success.

v. Self-discipline.

Developing control over myself, and this begins with mastery over my thoughts. Self-discipline helps me to think before I act. This word “think before you act” have always been a word that I have always heard from childhood but many a times it makes no meaning or I might have finish acting before I remember. I should endeavor to exercise control over my emotions, but it first begins with knowing who I am, having a knowledge about my personality so as to what my reactions and expression is at different situation. Self-discipline will make me to focus on my goal, cut away the unnecessary and utilize my time. Emotion cannot be trusted in all cases, but with self-discipline, I can balance my emotion with reason.

vi. Think accurately.

Thought is a powerful weapon, so it has to be used wisely. The world can benefit from my thought if I use it well. Analyzing everything well, giving it a thought before accepting it or giving it out.

Our thoughts are causes. You sow a thought, you reap an action. You sow an action, you reap a habit. You sow a habit, you reap a character. You sow a character, you reap a destiny. It all starts with a thought. James Allen said in his book As a Man Thinketh. A man’s mind is like a garden. If we plant good seeds, we will have a good garden. But if we don’t plant anything, something will grow and they will be weeds. That is nature’s law. The same is true in our lives. I would go a step further. Even if we plant good seeds, seeds will still grow. The process of weeding goes on forever. So I have to continually watch my thought, see that I sow positive thought and make my life positive.

vii. Adversity and defeat.

Every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit for those who have positive mental attitude and apply it. Obstacles can either be stopping block or a stepping stone to success. I should always bear it in mind that there is bad time, likewise there is good time, but the only tool I have with me all the time is my mind, so I should train my tool (mind) to stand at all time. Handling adversity well will only strengthens me and make me shine. I should show courage in adversity, and as well stand again after defeat.

Having learned a lot from this book I am challenge to aspire only for success in all I do and in every aspect of life. Placing control on my emotions, time and money. Work with positive mental attitude; develop the right kind of attitude towards myself and life. Look for successful people and walk with them, or adopt their principle. Importantly, have a purpose for life in which all my energy and strength is be dispensed and believe that it is achievable. One more thing I will mention is that I will always do more than am paid for.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“One single idea may have greater weight than the labor of all the men, animals and engines for a century.”

This word shows that idea is powerful, just like it was said that idea rules the world, all we see around us today is just an idea conceive or receive by some people. A idea can set the whole world free, the world still need ideas on the issue of health, education etc. I pray that I receive an idea.

“Great success is the result of one’s understanding and using a positive mental attitude.”

Success is not by luck or by just hard work, but by good actions and thoughts having a positive mental attitude, a man can work hard with a negative attitude about himself or work, but a good feeling about what you do, who you are and good thought will bring a breakthrough and attracts favor.

“Striving for success has its detractors.”

Not everybody I meet in life will see things the way I see it, some will even say that it can’t work; some might not even want to invest in it. But with dedication and effort with positive mental attitude I can excel.

“Time is your most precious asset.”

Time, to me I can say is life, so ma waste of it is a waste of life. The best gift a man can render to another is a portion of his time to show he cares, help and assist another to achieve his goal.

“You must vanquish fear before it vanquishes you.”

Fear has nothing to give a man than to held him bound and irrelevant. I must in all ways overcome fear and act against it in faith.

“There is no scarcity of opportunity.”

Opportunity is always around us, we just can’t just see it. If I focus on what is not I will be unable to see what should be. Imagination will make me recognise opportunities around me if only I can learn and cultivate my imagination, thinking right and putting in the right action.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

The New Dynamics of Winning

Assessment by Saliu Olaniyi (Nigeria)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The mind behind the book is ability to access the inner resources of strength and commitment that are the defining characteristics of a champion in any field. Becoming a winner, thinking like a champion- becoming a winner through thinking. Applying winners thought to every field of life, in career and personal life. Transforming ability to tangible accomplishments – learning how to put resources together.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. The mind-set of a champion.

The author mentioned that we are in a world where competition, change, and complexity is increasing, the unexpected is happening and enough people are working hard to experience a change and even seeking changes everywhere, but the only way to succeed lies in the ability to access the inner resources of strength and staying committed to it.

I found this personally useful that in my mind lies the ability to change my world for good and create a good life, a winning successful life that I want. The opportunities are still available if I can see it, conceive it in me, by preparing for it differently, doing things differently and make them happen.

ii. The winners’ trait. Becoming a winner takes 90% of guts and 10% of talent. Common-sense, knowing your field and self-reliance are the three traits of winners.

I see this as the three basic things to have in that, good feeling about one self is not just good enough, but getting right about what you want to be, and knowing that which you want to be and taking firm decision on it will make me to be part of winners that the world will celebrate.

iii. Integrity.

No matter what you want to become, it must be on the right part. Holding to your strength of character despites external pressures. This I found to be very fundamental, it is obvious today that people in the quest to be famous or wealthy lay hands on wrong things or evil, allows themselves to be deceived by the sweetness of fame and gain. They compromise there integrity and at the end have their name spoilt or end up in hall of shame instead of fame as said by the author. No matter what I want to become, no matter the fame, I must do it right, I must do right things. Personal life of professional life, I must have integrity.

iv. Mental toughness.

Flowing with the tide, the storm and hardship will leave one day, but you still standing after the storm is what is important. Bad and good days will surely come but handling the bad days well by making most of it.

I certain that there will be hard times just like there is rainy and dry seasons. This should guide that you store enough water in the rainy season for the dry season. This means one should prepare for the unexpected, things will not always go as expected or planned, but that does not mean success is uncertain. “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and keep yourself ready for the surprises “

v. The price of success.

Hard work is never enough. The price of success as stated here is total commitment. Do everything in your power to do well as possibly can. Not all who work hard are committed to what they do. Commitment is putting all of yourself to what you do.

When all your mind and effort is in what you do then success is inevitable. If I can pay the price then I can expect the gold. It takes me to put all my best into what am doing, giving it all it takes, even if I fall I still get up again and dust myself and try the more. “You get what you pay for.”

vi. Coachability.

You don’t have to know everything as long as you know people who know the things you don’t know. Being coachable, helps you to be a good coach. Having someone you are looking up to. When you have a role model, it enables you to be tolerance, and opens you up to guidance. It makes you the best motivator and as well makes you more open to being coachable.

vii. Self-esteem.

Think it, believe it. The secret to wearing a gold medal in the external world is to first see yourself wearing it within – Be an inner winner. Winning starts from within, think yourself that you can achieve your goal, you can be successful. Self-esteem, the way you think and see yourself, is the root of all behavior, so make every effort to feel good about yourself, see yourself as a can achieve person, not destroying yourself with self-destructive thought and belief.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

These ideas are to me the fundaments, a must do that can bring about success, transforming potent ideas into action, the word about integrity also makes me known that even if you find yourself in an environment where dishonesty is rampant, I should maintain my integrity, not let it go for fame or wealth. I desire to encourage young males like me in living a life of integrity and measuring up to leadership role, the ideas in this book have added to my knowledge and understanding.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“There are no mistakes or failures, only lessons.”

I found this word so inspiring that never because of fear of failure never do anything. Just like in growing up as a child, there are time we fall when trying to walk, time we do mistakes, but yet we still try harder. So in life, in the journey to achievement and success, I should not see my mistakes of failure as they are but see them as a lesson. I remember a word by Thomas Edison who after trying an invention for over 100 times, he said “I have only discover one way that will work and 99 ways that would not work” (paraphrased). So is a matter of trial and giving it your best.

“Other individuals are merely mirrors of what you see in yourself.”

I see comparison is a foolish thing to do. Instead of compare, better believe in yourself, appreciate your uniqueness and learn from people instead of just feeling uneasy about them. Even if after you have compare or imitate you will still end up with yourself. So on my daily walk and work to success, I should never strive, but learn from others who I can learn from and measure my success by the self- respect I have for myself not what others will say.

“Champions are born, but they can be unmade by their perceptions and responses.”

This word is powerful. It simply talks about how I see myself and my disposition to who I am. How I think and I feel about myself-Attitude. I remember a book I once read titled you can win written by an Indian author Shiv Khera he likens our attitude to a balloon filled with helium gas which when released keeps moving up in the air. What makes me a champion is my perception and how I respond to my value, my inner inbuilt attributes.

“Integrity is non-situational, and it is absolute.”

A man of integrity is not just known for his integrity in one thing or for partial integrity, but integrity in all things and absolute integrity. I must not live a dual life but bring integrity into whatsoever I do, not abusing powers but using it rightly.

“Having power is like consuming salt water: The more you consume, the thirstier you get.”

This I have found to be true from my environment here as many people in the place of power do anything to get there, and the ones who aspires to get power do anything to get there. It has enslaved many, and many have lost their lives or image doing this. This I see as a rat race and I will never join them.

“Once a weakness had been identified, hard work could turn it into strength.”

That I am weak is not an excuse, but I can rather turn my weaknesses into strength. If I can discipline myself, be patient and pay the price and not mind the pain, then I can overcome the weakness.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

It has a twenty-one day training program. I’m still going through the exercises.
