As a Man Thinketh
Assessment by Jessie Ngaliwah (Zimbabwe)
1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?
The main idea the author is trying to convey in this book is that one should realize that they are the masters of their thoughts and that thoughts determine the outcome thus it is essential to train one’s thoughts and attitude in order to have a positive and successful life. The author believes that a person can improve the quality of their life by improving their thoughts. A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but by choosing his thoughts he can indirectly form his circumstances because one’s circumstances is shaped by their character.
2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas it was important to you followed by an explanation after each one as to why. Use personal examples from your own life.
i. Thoughts are not secret and powerless and that they shape our life in a very significant way.
This was very important to me because it made me realize the power my thoughts have played in my life because they have often translated to my behavior when l encounter any challenges. The analogy thoughts are like seeds in the garden of our mind thus we must nurture the helpful thoughts and weed out the destructive ones made me realize the impact my thoughts have had in my life and that I should try to think more positively. The book made me realize that the more we encourage thoughts of strength, courage and perseverance, the more our actions will be bold and the greater our chance for success. Also I realized that l have to plant the right seeds in the garden of my mind and nurture them, and at the same time pull out the bad weeds thus good thoughts make me vibrant and strong, while the weeds are disempowering. Furthermore l learnt that if l do not take care of my thought, then my life become a chaotic, overgrown, miserable mess because my thoughts are seeds that create my world.
ii. The connection of thought and mind was also an eye opener to me because l realized that the body is the servant of the mind and that our body rely on the operation of the mind.
The author made me realize that bad thoughts rob the body of its health and grace because they make the body sink into disease for example l tend to worry and overthink things sometimes and this book made me realize that I am doing a disservice to my body because this only leads to headaches and stress which deteriorates my body. I learnt that clean thoughts make clean habits whilst thoughts of malice and envy create bad habits hence it is essential to avoid bad thoughts.
iii. Thought and purpose are linked was very important to me because as a person who is sometimes afraid to take risks and always doubting myself I felt challenged to do better as l understood that he who conquers doubt and fear has conquered failure thus it is important that l believe in myself always.
Also I learned that until thought is linked with purpose there is no intelligent accomplishment therefore I should make purpose the centralizing part of my thoughts because thoughts of doubt and fear never accomplish anything.
iv. The thought factor in fear was also an enlightening idea to me because I realized that everything I achieve or not is directly linked to my thought process.
The author said that, “As a man thinks, so he is, as he continue to think so he remains thus l realized that in order to change l should be willing to change myself because no one is able to change my circumstances for me unless l am willing thus l should develop the strength that I see and admire in others.” The author gave the example of how both oppressor and slaves are cooperators of ignorance thus while seeming to afflict each other they are afflicting themselves. This relates to me personally because I am one to complain about how unfair certain situations are instead of finding the solution within myself hence l felt really challenged to check myself in order to inflict change because a person can only rise and achieve by lifting and improving his thoughts or refuse to change whilst remaining weak and miserable.
v. It is important to have dreams because dreams are the seedlings of reality thus one should cherish their visions and ideals and have the desire to achieve and obtain greatness.
I realized that I should stop relying on luck because there are certain challenges one can encounter along the way but it is important to know that gifts and material possessions are as a result of efforts and thoughts completed and visions realized because like the author said the vision you glorify in your mind will build and shape your life.
vi. I discovered the significance of serenity and how it is important to maintain your calm always.
As a person who struggles to control my emotions sometimes this made me want to make conscious efforts to check myself and improve because a calm person is quick to adapt which is an important tool to have. Also the calmer a person is the more they are likely to be more successful. It is important to have self-control because it is not a weakness rather it depicts strength and power.
vii. Circumstances do not make the man but reveals him to himself.
This was very interesting to me because I realized that my previous patterns of behavior have shaped my life today thus the book highlighted that our thoughts shape our characters and the situations we find ourselves in thus change comes from the mind first for it shapes our conditions. I learnt that good thoughts bear good fruits and bad thoughts bear bad fruits thus if the bad thought is fostered in our minds the opportunity then reveals its gathered power. It is therefore important to change my thoughts.
3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world?
These ideas and thoughts will help me in my personal life because now I have the understanding of how my thoughts impact the quality of life that l lead and how they have shaped my character which will help me control my thinking in order to have a better life. Also I now know that bad thoughts improve the chances of illness and diseases thus it is essential that l learn and adopt new ideas that are positive. The importance of dreams will also help in my personal life because now. I understand the implications of limiting myself and thus it is important to have dreams. This will help me create a better world because now I understand the implications of ignorance and how my actions today can affect the world tomorrow, I also plan to do my part to educate others on the importance of having a purpose and dreams.
4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you?
‘Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound ‘ is the statement that got my attention because it made me recognize my faults in the situations l find myself in because it does not help to complain without changing your mindset because l should be willing to change myself first before changing my circumstances because if a person complains and does nothing they remain in that same situation they find themselves in because I am the sole author of my condition. I leant that thoughts crystallizes into habits and in turn habits solidifies into the circumstances l face thus l should improve my thought process.
5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand that or unclear about and are there any ideas that you disagree with if so why?
No the book was clear enough and it made me rediscover the power that l have as an individual to change my circumstances and improve my health.
6. Did the book contain any exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?
No it did not contain any exercises

Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Assessment by Jessie Ngaliwah (Zimbabwe)
1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?
The main idea the author is trying to convey is that we can all be much more than we are led to believe or what we believe and that it is okay to be bold, adventurous and free. Also the author is trying to show that we don’t have to conform to the norm or be pressured to. We learn that only by taking courage do we get to learn not by sitting idle and that we should be open minded and curious.
2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas it was important to you followed by an explanation after each one as to why. Use personal examples from your own life.
i. In order to succeed in something that l consider difficult or impossible to do I must first believe that l have arrived and reached the goal already.
The author states that ‘to fly as thought, to anywhere that is, you must begin by knowing that you have already arrived’. By this statement l learnt that I should believe in myself and the goal that l want to attain. I learnt that no goal is impossible as long as l set my mind to it and believe that l can do it. This book is a clear example of how practice makes perfect thus we should always practice every chance we get and we should never be afraid to learn.
ii. I learned that we should lift ourselves from ignorance and know that we can do better.
From the book I learned that if only we can lift ourselves from ignorance we can discover the excellence, intelligence and the hidden skills that we have and thus we can be free and learn to fly. This idea was very vital to me because as a person l have learnt that it is okay to be curious and ask questions and that l don’t have to conform to the norm. I learnt that there is power within me and that by being open minded I can soar to greater heights.
iii. I realized that it is okay to have doubts sometimes but the most important thing is to pick myself up and continue moving even after I fall.
In the book Jonathan never gave up even after falling multiple times and he also had moments when he doubted himself and his abilities but he kept moving forward. This shows that I should continue moving even when I encounter sad moments, I should find a way to pick myself up.
iv. I learned that I should not harbor hatred and learn to forgive because in the end hatred eats away at your soul and it is not a burden worth carrying.
In the book we find that even when Jonathan was banished by his own flock, he found a way to forgive and was willing to share all his knowledge with them despite the way that they treated him. This related to me because l sometimes struggle to forgive past transgressions and by doing so l realized that it only disadvantaging me and that at the end of the day forgiveness is not a weakness but a strength. Also I learnt the power of love and how it brings people together. I discovered that I should spread love and kindness even after going through trials and hardships.
v. I learned that in order to achieve and break boundaries l should not listen to the discouraging voices around me because people can often pull you down and discourage you from attaining your dreams.
In the book Jonathan experienced discouragements even from his own family who were encouraging him to conform and just concentrate on eating because flying was not going to get him anywhere. The statement’ I do not exist to impress the world. I exist to live my life in a way that will make me happy’ really spoke to me because l struggle with the outside noise at times which leads me to be worried about what people around me would think but I now know and understand that it is essential to think of myself first and what makes me happy before thinking of anyone else. I should never let the words of others get me down and I should make my happiness the first priority.
vi. I realized that it is okay to change my mind at any time and that I am free to do whatever I want to do without worry thus I am free to choose a future that I want.
This point was really important to me because as people sometimes we do not realize that we have free will and the power to change our own circumstances and often feel guilty about changing our minds. I learned that every event in my life is there because in a way I have drawn it there and that what I choose to do with it is up to me thus I have the power to shape my world.
vii. Jonathan states that in order to break the chains of your body you should break the chains of your thoughts first.
This shows that our minds can be chains that bind us and that we should believe in ourselves. I also learnt that every achievement starts in the mind and therefore l should have a positive mindset always and believe that I can accomplish anything. Furthermore l have realized that I should have a limitless mindset and that l should always be willing to learn.
3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world?
These ideas will help me in my personal life because l have learnt the power of perseverance and not giving up and now whatever challenges I may face I now know that I should never give up instead l should dust myself up and keep moving forward because only by practicing do we really learn. I realized that it is okay to be curios and ask questions and in order to succeed I must have the courage to stand up to the norm even when everyone is against me. This will help me create a better world because I know that I should not limit myself and that it is important to learn to forgive and share the knowledge that I have. Also I will be helped in a practical way because I have leant that I should believe in my goals even before attaining them and that it is okay to doubt myself sometimes as long as l keep moving. I should have courage and an open mind and should be willing to learn always.
4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important.
“We choose our next world through what we learn on this one. Learn nothing and the next world is the same as this one.:
This really spoke to me because it shows that I have the power to change the world and my circumstances and that my choices have power. If l sit idle and do nothing my situation remains the same but real change requires action and that if I want any change I should be willing to change myself first because if I do nothing everything remains the same.
5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand that or unclear about and are there any ideas that you disagree with if so why?
No.
6. Did the book contain any exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?
No it did not contain any exercises.
7. Was there anything you read that you would like to comment on that was not covered by the questions, if so please comment.
The book was really intriguing and l love that it emphasized the fact that we should put aside everything that limits us and that we have the freedom to be free and be ourselves without any limitations. Also l realized that I should always stay humble and never let the accolades get to my head or make me become a different person because as we saw in the book Jonathan remained humble through out and did not want to be viewed as a god instead he gave hope to others and continued to practice.

PsychoCybernetics
Assessment by Jessie Ngaliwah (Zimbabwe)
1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?
The main idea the author is trying to convey is that the way one thinks can help improve their self-image which in turn improves their quality of life and happiness. The book emphasizes the importance of having a good self-image and shares techniques on how to improve and avoid negative talk because self-image is the key to living a better life.
2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from you own life.
i. Act as the sort of person you conceive yourself.
This idea was really important to me because I learned that if I conceive myself to be a failure then I will find an excuse or some way to fail even if l get opportunities. I learned that we tend to invite rejection and failure into our lives because of the thoughts we have. The author gave an example of a schoolboy who is convinced that he is bad in mathematics and has his report to prove it. By believing this the student invited failure and found a way to prove his point. I realized that I should learn to perceive myself in a positive way if l want to change my expectations and l should have belief in myself. As someone who constantly undermines my abilities this was very important to me because by doing so I realized I was inviting failure in my life thus l should always have a winning spirit.
ii. One is never too young to change their self-image thus everyone has the power to change their self-image.
I learned that we can change the thinking of self by employing positive thinking however positive thinking cannot be effective with the same self-image. Thus once the self is changed our circumstances are bound to change because we don’t have to identify with our failure rather we should learn to use more factual and descriptive terms. I realized that when our self-image is intact and secure we feel good however we tend to feel insecure and anxious when it is threatened. This idea was personally important to me because I tend to get easily offended and by doing so I realized that I had to work on my self-esteem and the way l view myself and that it’s never too late to do so.
iii. Our attitudes and interpretations of situations are very important
I learned that our creative mechanism works upon information and data which we feed into it thus our thoughts, beliefs and interpretations play a very critical role in the problem to be worked upon. This is very important to me because I realized that if I think that I am inferior, under-serving and incapable it will create a negative self-image which will in turn affect the way I respond to situations. As someone who has emotional scars of my own I discovered that emotional scars create a marred self-image and that is something I should work on daily.
iv. The power of the creative imagination
Our imagination plays a very huge role because we can formulate our goals through imagination therefore we have the power to direct our success mechanism using our imagination. I learned that imagination is creative in everything we do thus stored information is not only limited to memories of past experiences and learned facts because ideas are everywhere. I also learned that we must learn to trust our creative imagination and that we should not jam it by becoming overly anxious and too concerned hence we must let it work rather than make it work. As someone who unnecessarily worries most of the time this idea was very helpful to me and it has helped me maintain my calmness during stressful situations.
v. The nervous system reacts appropriately to what you think or imagine to be true.
This was really important to me because I realized that imagination alone can be responsible for our own misery if we set up a negative failure mechanism. I learned that we act and feel not according to how things are really like but according to the image our minds holds. Thus the best way to break habit is to have a clear mental image because your nervous system cannot tell the difference between an imagined experience and a real experience. As a result if we picture ourselves a certain way it is nearly the same as the actual performance thus mental images give us an opportunity to practice new traits and habits. I learned that if I clearly see something in my mind before I can do it, my creative success mechanism takes over and increases my chances of actually doing the job because mental thinking forces one to use positive thinking. Our mental images should be in line with the objects they represent thus we should avoid entertaining any doubts. This idea was very important to me because I learned that I should avoid negative thoughts and think positively.
vi. You make mistakes, mistakes don’t make you.
This was also a statement that was very important to me because l realized that failures, mistakes as well as errors are at times necessary steps in the learning process thus they are not an end in themselves. In this light l learned that l should not dwell on my mistakes but rather use them as a learning experience. I discovered that criticizing myself continually tends to make things worse and does not help matters. One should not be afraid of making mistakes because the greatest mistake one can make is being afraid to make one therefore we should not be too proud to accept help. I learned that the past only defines how we got there but where we end is our own responsibility thus I am responsible for my own future and I should bet on myself. This idea was very important to me because I have always blamed myself after making a mistake but in this light l discovered that it is okay to make mistakes rather they should be a fueling force.
vii. Physical relaxation is linked to mental relaxation.
This was very important to me because l learned that physical relaxation has the power to dehypnotize us from negativity. This idea was very important to me because as someone who tends to want to do a lot of things at once, I learned that I should form a habit of consciously responding to things that are present and that l should live today as best as I can because by doing so I will be making my tomorrow better. I learned the value of taking one step at a time and relaxing while working. I learned that the best ideas come when your mind is relaxed and at ease.
3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way; both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world?
These ideas will help me in my personal life because I have learned about the importance of happiness and the impact it can have on our health. By sharing this information with my loved ones and people I surround myself with, I believe it will help immensely in improving and creating a better life. The idea of creating a mental vacation has helped me immensely and over time I have seen the improvements in my own personal life as it has led to a clearer mind. Also I am now okay with making mistakes because I have discovered that by being too afraid to make one. I was not helping myself in any way rather l was making things worse for myself. Also I believe that if everyone had a good self-image the world would surely be a better place thus these ideas will be very helpful to my community and the world at large. I also learned that if you think of what you have to do as easy it will become so which a valuable lesson that I have been also using in my personal life.
4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got you attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.
“If you are to be happy, you must be happy period!”
“Not happy because of really got my attention because l realized that being happy is a decision that one makes and you can’t wait until you deserve something to be happy.”
I discovered that the stomach, liver, heart and other internal organs function better when we are happy therefore by choosing to be happy we are also taking care of our body. We also think, perform and feel healthier when we are happy thus it is important that we practice being happy.
“Forgiveness which is remembered re-infects the soul.”
This was really important to me because I learned that by saying that I will forgive but not forget I was merely just saying that l will not forgive at all. I realized that when I forgive, I should forgive wholeheartedly instead of remembering the issue because that is not true forgiveness.
5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?
No.
6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?
Yes the book contained exercises which helped me a lot. The first exercise was about using mental pictures to relax which was to be practiced at least 30 minutes daily. We were given four mental pictures which we could use to help us relax and this helped me in a very significant way because I was able to let my guard down and just relax. It also helped me improve my self-image by thinking positive thoughts.
The second exercise was about habits where l was to learn how to habitually tie my shoes and starting with the same foot every day. I was to do this for a period of 21 days and afterwards I have been consciously practicing positive habits which have helped me a lot. I have found this exercise beneficial because it has greatly improved the way l see myself and my personality by acting, feeling and thinking positive thoughts.
The third exercise was about creating a vivid mental picture of the telephone ringing and choosing not to answer it by sitting quietly, composed and unmoved and allowing it to ring. This was to practice no response in spite of the pressure l might face. I continued to see myself in situations that have previously upset me and learned that I have the choice of not letting it bother me. This exercise was very useful to me.
7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment.
The book covered a lot of aspects and the connection between our thoughts and age was really enlightening especially the fact that sometimes we tend to think ourselves to old age because expecting to grow old at a certain age will make us look and feel old. And also l realized that our conscience can fool us at times because they are shaped by our lived experiences thus as much as having a conscience is very important we should also be careful and consider if your conscience is not deceiving you.
Also the principles of being successful which are sense of direction, courage, charity, esteem, self-confidence and self-acceptance have really helped me a lot and I learned that frustration, insecurity, uncertainty, resentment and emptiness tends to lead to failure therefore we should learn to avoid these qualities.

Success through a Positive Mental Attitude
Assessment by Jessie Ngaliwah (Zimbabwe)
1. What is the main idea the author is trying to convey in this book?
The main idea the author is trying to portray is that having a positive mental attitude leads to success, happiness, health and also wealth and on the other hand a negative mental attitude tends to lead to failure, unhappiness and also illness. The author argues that having a positive mental attitude attracts positive changes and thus one tends to achieve more because of stress reduction and management. Furthermore having a positive mental attitude opens up one’s mind and gives us a better chance at success.
2. What were the seven main ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas and follow by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.
i. The idea that happiness begins at home was important to me because one cannot spread happiness outside unless they are happy at home.
This has helped me make a conscious effort to be happy every day because I have to find happiness within me first before l spread it to the world. It was also important for me because it made me aware of my environment and the people closest to me and how I can contribute positive energy to my friends, family and colleagues.
ii. Also the idea that l am the most important living person was very important to me because it boosted my self-esteem in an unimaginable way.
As a young women who is trying to discover herself in this ever changing world, I have always known that I am special but this book further reiterated what I have always known to be true. This book helped me reaffirm that there is nobody like me in this whole entire world so if l have that positive attitude I will not have any barriers or be intimidated by anything in the world.
iii. Furthermore the idea of identifying and seeing opportunities right in front of me was nothing short of life changing in my life.
As someone who is always looking for new and better opportunities it was a good life lesson not to look very far away and learn that the simplest things can have a huge impact. I learnt that I should identify a need in my community and then find a way to carter for that need. The author taught me that I should not limit myself rather I should train my mind to learn that no barrier is too big and l can achieve anything l set my mind to. The example the author used were also enlightening to me for example the paper clips story showed me that small things often have huge impacts.
iv. Moreover having a positive mental attitude has helped me attract happiness and self-esteem because l realized that being negative all the time attracts bad things.
The idea that we are not poor because of God but we tend to blame situations for our own short comings was very important to me because I have learnt to manifest that I am the best and sending positive energy into the atmosphere is very beneficial to me. As someone who is very spiritual, l love the fact that the author emphasized the importance of the bible thus we should make the bible our reference and have a connection with God. Most importantly I need to have purpose and know what l want to do with my life.
v. Additionally the idea that one should not only do their best but go the extra mile was very important to me because it taught me that going the extra mile and doing the little things can make a huge difference.
I love the fact that the author used Alexander Graham bell as an example because his story resonated with me. I learnt that there were a lot of people who invented the telephone before him but because he went the extra mile he got the acknowledgement simply by pressing a button. As a person who always gives my best in everything I do this made me realize that I have not been doing enough and I need to go the extra mile in order to see a difference.
vi. The idea that we are the masters of our minds and that we should learn from defeat and draw inspiration from it was very important to me because we have control of what we think about and how we react to situations.
I have realized that self-discipline is important in both our personal life and our professional lives and without it one is bound to face challenges. This has helped me practice self-discipline in everything that l do and I have learnt the value of being a good team player.
vii. It is important that one should budget their time and self-care is very important.
This idea was very important to me because I learned that in order to give out to the world one should have something to give first and thus it is important to take care of yourself. It is important to preserve your energy and one needs to take time to recharge one in a while because if you do not recharge you have nothing to give to the next person. Mental fitness and diet are also other important facts because they link to success. It is also import to note that the subconscious mind never forgets thus one should be careful of the company that they keep.
3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping to create a better world, if so how?
These ideas will help me in my personal life and help create a better world because of the values I learnt. I am able to provide happiness to people around me and my family and friends will learn the values and benefits of having a positive mental attitude. If everyone learns and realizes that happiness begins at home our world will come a better place to live in because people will be contributing to happiness in their own communities.
In addition the idea of looking for opportunities near me and right in front me will benefit my community because I will be addressing issues close to their hearts and will create employment in my local community. I will also encourage other young people to remove barriers in their daily lives and believe in themselves by having a positive mental attitude. I will also encourage other young people and my friends to not only do their best but go the extra mile in everything that they do.
4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.
Yes the statement that the bank is your friend caught my attention because it made me realize that there is no excuse not to start any business as long as one has an idea. The author made me understand that a lot of people who have made it today used other people’s money to get started and thus I realized the power of OPM. I also learnt that one should have integrity and return the money owed in order to create trust.
The other statement that caught my attention is that we are a mind with a body not a body with a mind and thus we should explore the powers of our minds. I learnt that there is no limit to what one can do as long as they believe in themselves. I discovered that our mind is our greatest tool and this was life changing for me in both my personal and professional life.
5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?
No.
6. Did the book contain exercise for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all the exercises and did you find them helpful?
Yes the book contained exercises and I found them really helpful for example the worry reversal technique has helped me find the positive side of my concerns so now instead of worrying about my problem I now focus on what l can do to solve it.
The second exercise l found really helpful is achieving goals by overcoming obstacles thus I identify the goal I want to achieve and then think of obstacles that might stand in my way. This has helped me stay focused and motivated even when things get challenging.
7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment?
Yes I loved that the author emphasized his points by using stories that we could relate to for example Henry Ford’s story showed the importance of having faith and the sales person story showed the importance of self-motivation and believing in yourself. Moreover I learned that one should not procrastinate and it is important to have someone you can identity to like a mentor and whenever you face a difficult choice ask yourself what they would do. In addition I learnt that we should not let fear stop us from doing anything rather we should have courage like the little boy who was bullied in the book, he was brave enough to face his bullies and thus we should face our fears in life too.
