Charity Wadzanai Masuka – Assessments

As A Man Thinketh So Is He
Assessment by Charity Masuka (Zimbabwe)

1. What is the main idea the author is trying to convey?

The main idea the author is trying to convey is that every man’s destiny is shaped by the thoughts he entertains. Thoughts have the power to bring about transformations in our lives and these transformations can be either negative or positive depending on the kind of thoughts one entertains. Evil thoughts will bring negative results while good thoughts will bring about positive results.

Our thoughts have the power to influence the creation of our external environment. There is a view that if you can think it, you can achieve it or have it. We can think our desired future into existence.

Our thoughts can also have an impact on the action or decisions that we will make in life.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

(i) A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the sum total of his thoughts
The idea is personally important to me because I have practically seen it take root in my life. For many years I used to think lowly of myself having come from a poor background. In my first five years of being employed, my thoughts were that the job I had found was the best for me and that it was all I needed. With this kind of thinking, I never thought of improving myself either academically or professionally. As a result of these unproductive thoughts, I remained where I was. It was only when I began to change my thinking and began to improve myself academically and professionally that my career life began to change for the better. I began to think that the sky is the limit and that I don’t have to remain at the same level in life. The positive thoughts made me the person I am today.

The character that I exhibit also has been built up by the positive way in which I think. Even in the midst of the most challenging circumstances, I always think on the positive side of things. I try by all means to entertain only good thoughts and reject evil thoughts.

(ii) What we think about can have a negative or positive effect on circumstances.
This idea is important to me because it makes me know that the way I think has the power to impact on circumstances of life either positively or negatively. Thoughts of fear will only draw to me those things that I fear. Thoughts of looking down on yourself will cause your life to be stagnant or bring poverty. For example like I mentioned in point (i) above, when my thoughts were that where I was in my career life was sufficient for me, the effect on my career was that it remained stagnant. However, when I began to think of improving myself and did it, the effect was that I got a better job and my career life changed positively.

(iii) Thoughts have an effect on our health and our bodies.
The way we think can heal our bodies or make them sick. This idea is personally important to me because it makes me aware that the way my body functions is affected by my thoughts (mind). For example in my life, there are occasions where a thought has come into my mind after seeing someone with the flu; and I began to think when I last had the flu myself. At times it would have been a very long time back, but because of the thought of it, I begin to feel the flu symptoms. There are times also when I harbor thoughts of sorrow and begin to experience headaches. At other times on a positive note, when I am experiencing headaches and I begin to think positively and meditate on the word of God which promises healing, the headache will just disappear.

(iv) For there to be a successful accomplishment, thought must be linked to purpose, so that the purpose becomes the central point of a man’s thoughts. This idea is important to me in that it lets me know that for my thoughts to accomplish things for me in life there must be a purpose to which my thoughts should be targeted at. An experience in my life related to this idea has been when I purposed in my heart to serve God as a help meet (wife) of a servant of God. I began to target my thoughts towards this purpose such that within a year of having established this purpose, I met the man whom I am now in courtship with, a servant of God, a preacher of the gospel.

(v) All that I achieve and all that I fail to achieve is a direct result of my own thoughts.
This idea teaches me that I am the master of my own achievements or failures as a result of my thoughts and that I should not blame anyone for my failures or give credit to anyone for my achievements. In my first few working years, I failed to achieve anything in my career because I thought that the only thing that I needed in my life was the job that I had that time. However, as my mind began to be renewed through interactions and associations with people who thought otherwise, and as I continued in the company of people who kept encouraging me to further my studies, my thoughts gradually began to change. I began to see and think that where I was in my career life was just a beginning and that I still had a long way to go. Having nurtured this thought for a while, I purposed to go ahead and further my study from the foundation certificate I held to a Masters Degree. I thank God that I have since achieved my target.

(vi) The visible world is sustained by the visible world. This idea is found in the word of God in Hebrews 11:3; “……….what is seen was not made of what is visible” God Himself visualized the universe into being. Visions and ideals are very important in my life because as I cling to the mental pictures I create in my mind and the ideals, they will definitely come to pass one day in my life.

An example I can give of what I have experienced in my life is when I desired a brand new car so much that I began to visualize the type of brand new car I would drive and its colour. I nurtured this dream until one day it became a reality and I removed packaging from my brand new car.

(vii) A clear and calm mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom
This idea is personally important to me because I believe that peace of mind is conducive for better emotional and physical mental health. Through meditation on positive thoughts and the word of God, I have experienced inner peace even under stressful conditions and circumstances. Over a long period of time, I have trained myself to act calmly in situations that normally cause me to be agitated or nervous. I have learnt that calmness of mind influences my inner being, my body, circumstances and people around me. Maintaining calmness has not been easy as each day brings something which causes worry.

3. How will these ideas help you in a practical way, both in your daily, personal life and in helping you to create a better world?

a. The above ideas will help me in a practical way, both in my daily personal life by training me to entertain only good thoughts and reject evil ones that impact negatively on my life, on circumstances and on my actions. Evil thoughts come everyday of my life, but the ideas I have learnt in this book have taught me that I become what I think. Therefore whenever evil thoughts come into my mind, I should replace them with good thoughts.

b. The lessons above will help me not to hold on to negative thoughts which come to my mind daily. They will help me to constantly guard my mind from negative thoughts and to think only on those thoughts that will make me the person I want to be since I become what I think. For example right now in my country, instead of thinking on the negative things that are taking place, I should think of a better tomorrow and make plans with a better future in mind.

c. One of the lessons I have learnt from the above ideas is that my thoughts have an effect on my health and on my body. This will help me to maintain a healthy body and I will destroy every negative thought that will attract sicknesses and discomfort to my body. I will saturate my mind with thoughts of good health and well being.

d. The above ideas will help me to watch my thoughts and handle more efficiently my daily personal life including stressful and difficult circumstances so that I can create a better world.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

a. “A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must and will bring forth.”

The statement is important to me because it teaches me that I should never leave my mind unattended, that I should always guard and watch my mind, being in control of what should stay there and what should be destroyed before it takes root. The statement teaches me that whether I like it or not, the mind will always be receiving information, but that it is up to me to weed out the bad thoughts just as a gardener would remove weeds from his garden.

b. “Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.”

This statement is important to me because it spells out that which once bound me. I expected my life to improve and yet I was not willing to improve myself, and as long as I did not entertain thoughts of improving myself followed by corresponding action, I remained bound to stagnation.

c. “A particular train of thought persisted in, be it good or bad, cannot fail to produce its results on the character and circumstances.”

The statement is important to me as it warns me to choose wisely the train of though that should dominate my mind as any train of thought that I persist on whether good or bad will produce results in my life after their own kind.

d. “The body is a delicate and plastic instrument, which responds readily to the thoughts by which it is impressed, and habits of thought will produce their own effects, good or bad, upon it….There is no physician like cheerful thought for dissipating the ills of the body.”

e. “They who have no central purpose in their life fall an easy prey to petty worries, fears, troubles and self-pitying, all of which are indications of weakness,…”

This statement is important to me because I have experienced it on several occasions in my life. Whenever I have had a purpose, I have become very diligent and focused in my thinking in order for me to accomplish my target.

f. “Doubt and fear are great enemies of knowledge, and he who encourages them, who does not slay them, thwarts himself at every step”

I agree with this very important statement that doubt and fear are enemies of knowledge/faith. The bible narrates of a man called Job whose fear brought upon him that which he was afraid of. The bible also tells us of the story of Peter who thought he could walk on water like his Lord Jesus. He managed the first few steps but when doubt overcame him, he began to sink. I believe he was now thinking that he could not do it. Initially he thought he could do it, but when doubt came upon him he thought otherwise.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

I understood the whole book and I am clear about everything in it and I also agree with the ideas in the book.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Assessment by Charity Masuka (Zimbabwe)

1. What is the main idea the author is trying to convey?

The main idea the author is trying to convey is that in life we can achieve what we so much desire as long as we are determined, committed and remain focused on the goal we want to achieve. No one has to live an ordinary life if they decide not to. However most people limit themselves to the ordinary and miss out on their true potential.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

(i) The right to make choices – Jonathan Seagull chose not to be an ordinary gull.
Although the life of an ordinary seagull is to learn simple facts of flight and how to get food, Jonathan Seagull chose not to be ordinary. He chose to be distinguished from the other birds. This idea is important to me because in life one can choose to be ordinary or extraordinary by building life around a greater purpose. From a personal life point of view, I can liken myself to Jonathan Seagull. I was born from an uneducated and poor family. Having had a background of much struggle in life until the age of 25 without having achieved much in education, I made a choice of no longer remain an ordinary uneducated member of the family. I made a choice to pick myself up from where my parents had afforded to educate me. I began a long and painful journey of working and at the same time studying. The job I did then was not well paying because of lack of good educational qualifications.

(ii) Not being limited by what you are or what you have. Jonathan Seagull had a goal of wanting to know what he could do or what he could not do in the air. He was not limited by his nature or the type of wings he had. He was not limited by tradition. This idea is important to me as I can relate it to my own life. When I made a choice to further my studies, I refused to be limited by my background or by the nature of my family members. I was determined like Jonathan to break the curse of being a bunch of uneducated people.

(iii) Not being discouraged even in the midst of voices telling you, “you can not make it”
Jonathan Seagull was discouraged even in the midst of voices telling him that he could not make it. This idea relates to my story of furthering my studies. People would discourage me by saying so many negative things. I remember at one organization where I used to work as a junior clerk and I had embarked on secretarial studies after hours. My colleagues would mock me by saying, “this organization only requires one secretary, whose secretary do you think you will be”, but just like Jonathan, I was determined. I ignored them. I completed the course, which became the stepping stone to where I am today.

(iv) Boredom, fear and anger are the reasons that a gull’s life is so short. Jonathan overcame boredom, fear and anger and he lived a long and fine life. This is a very important idea to me. I can personally testify how it has also worked for me in my life. I have been able to do away with boredom, fear and anger. I used to suffer from a condition called hyperacidity and that time I was a person who could be so easily angered or become bored. I was so full of fear of death also. Each time I became angry, the condition would get worse and I would even end up in hospital. When I became a Christian, I managed to get rid of boredom, anger and fear. The condition of hyperacidity has since disappeared and I am well and hearty. If I had allowed anger and fear of death to remain in my life, I might have been dead by now. I now live a stress free life full of joy.

(v) Any number or target is a limit, perfection does not have limits. In life when we put numbers or targets to whatever we want to achieve, we limit ourselves. When we put numbers or targets, it means we can only achieve up to the number or target we have set, yet there could be greater potential ahead of us. When we set our goals with numbers and targets, we miss out on our true potential. In my life I have discovered that each time I want to achieve a certain target and putting numbers to the target, I have limited myself because I tend to relax after I have achieved the set target. This becomes a limitation because if I had not set a target, I would have surpassed the number or target I had set for myself.

(vi) Practice brings about perfection. The more you practice, the better you become. This saying worked for Jonathan Seagull and he became so perfect in his flying because of practice. This idea has also worked for me. My practice mostly has been on spiritual matters where I have been training my mind to always be thinking about positive things based on the word of God. I have been practicing the word of God and building up my spiritual muscle such that when I am faced with any circumstance in life I am able to apply God’s word to it. I am discovering that this practice is bringing perfection to my mind little by little.

(vii) Jonathan Seagull became an instructor and produced seagulls after his kind.
Jonathan Seagull helped other gulls to realize the potential in them. For example, Kirk Maynard Gull who had never dreamt he could fly flew effortlessly on being told by Jonathan that he had the freedom to be himself. Just like Jonathan, I have also become like an instructor. I have mentored quite a number of members of my family. Some of them have also made a decision to further their education through my guidance and I have seen their lives being transformed. Some of these family members have realized such great potential which they never thought they had and it gives me so much joy to see lives being transformed. I have been telling them that they can attain any kind of exceptional performance.

3. How will these ideas help you in a practical way, both in your daily, personal life and in helping you to create a better world?

a. The right to make choices
This idea makes me aware that I have the right to make choices in my life. I can make a choice. It encourages me to always have this realization that in my daily walk in life I must choose what is best for me. Making good and right choices will help create a better world for me and others around me.

b. Not being limited by what you are or what you have
The idea makes me to realize that what I am now or what I have or don’t have now can not be a limitation for me to excel in life. The fact that I came from a poor background of unlearned people can not stop me from excelling in my studies. This change in mentality will help me create a better world for myself and those I come into contact with.

c. Not being discouraged even in the midst of voices telling you that “you can not make it.”
As I continue with my studies, there are voices that have been telling me things like, “you are old now you can not make it”. The idea of not being discouraged will practically encourage me and I can ignore the voices. By not being discouraged and I continue with my studies, I will create a better world for myself.

d. Boredom, fear and anger are reasons for a shortened life.
This idea will help me practically in my daily life as it encourages me not to entertain boredom; fear and anger which can bring about sicknesses upon me and shorten my life. By keeping these things out of my life, I will live a long and productive life.

e. Any number or target is a limit, perfection does not have a limit
This idea will help me not to limit myself in life. I remember in my first few years of employment, I used to think that if only I can have a secretarial diploma I have made a great achievement. By thinking this way I was limiting myself. Ever since I changed my mindset, heaven is the limit.

f. Practice brings about perfection
As I continue practicing renewing my thoughts with positive things, I will eventually have a perfect positive mindset. This perfect positive mindset will help me to interact well with those around me creating a better world.

g. The idea of perfecting myself through study will enable me to be an instructor to others.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

Quote 1: “his one sorrow was not solitude, it was that the other seagulls refused to believe the glory of flight that awaited them; they refused to open their eyes and see”.

Comment: This statement is important to me in that I have been faced with the same situation as Jonathan. Although some of my folks have heeded the advice to improve themselves through study, there are some who have remained adamant. They have refused to believe that their lives can be transformed for the better simply by furthering their study. They have refused to open their eyes and see what has happened to those who have heeded the call.

Quote 2: “One school is finished, and the time has come for another to begin”

Comment: This statement which was an encouragement to Jonathan when he thought that he could fly no higher because he had become old is also an encouragement to me. It encourages me by letting me know that age can not be a limit for what I can do. The author also goes on to talk about the elder who was not enfeebled by age but was actually empowered by it.

Quote 3: “To fly as fast as thought, to anywhere that is, he said, “you must begin by knowing that you have already arrived”

Comment: This statement is important to me because it encourages me that for me to reach a desired goal, I must have confidence that I have already achieved that goal.

Quote 4: “One day Jonathan standing on shore, closing his eyes concentrating, all in a flash knew what Chiang had been telling him.”

Comment: This statement is very important in my life because it reminds me that there are times in life when we need to give time to look closely at our goals, close our eyes to everything else and concentrate on the goals. By doing so we will definitely come up with ideas to achieve these goals.

Quote 5: “Your body, from wingtip to wingtip, Jonathan would say other times, is nothing more than your thought itself in a form you can see. Break the chains of your thoughts and break the chains of your body too.”

Comment: This statement is very important and very true. We can limit our achievements by the negative thoughts that we entertain. If we think that there is something on our body that limits us, then that thing will surely be a limit.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

I did not quite understand the last part of part one going into part two. The sudden transformation that took place to Jonathan. Did Jonathan die and ended up in heaven and was now operating in that realm?

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

The book does not contain exercises for the reader to complete.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment.

Psycho-Cybernetics 2000
Assessment by Charity Masuka (Zimbabwe)

1. What is the main idea the author is trying to convey?

Psycho-Cybernetics is a program of personal fulfillment through the improvement of one’s self image. It is my conception of myself that will set the limits for the successes, failures and happiness I will encounter in my life. The opinion I have of myself is very important as it has a bearing on my behavior. Psycho-Cybernetics is about improving my personality.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

You have power to create change
Since my self-image has a bearing on my behavior, I have the power to create change by changing my self-image. This idea is very important to me as it is helping me to use my imagination to create the success I require for perfect health. Through this idea, I have made a conscious decision to become the person I want to be i.e. a strong and healthy person. To move toward this goal I am now consciously deleting the false beliefs that had been fed into my subconscious mind which is the storehouse of all my thoughts. The false beliefs were that the health condition I was experiencing was not curable. To begin to create this change, I have begun to use the five steps of reprogramming my self-image (CANCEL). I cancel every negative thought of my condition not being curable. I replace the negative thoughts with the positive thoughts in line with the Word of God which says, “With God all things are possible and that there is nothing too hard for God, and that God heals all diseases. I am now affirming my self-image by saying, “I am completely free from this condition”. I now focus on a strong and healthy me. I am now training myself to do the things I could not do like vigorous bodily exercises.

This reprogramming and changing of false beliefs concerning my health, to line up with the truth of the Word of God has not been easy, however, the determination to be healthy and living, has given me the patience to carry the reprogramming through the knowledge that I myself have the responsibility to bring about a change to my self-image and create a change to my situation. The idea has helped me to begin the process of replacing my negative self-image with a positive one.

The two principles of the subconscious mind and the two principles of the conscious mind.
The idea is important to me as it has helped me to discover the relationship between my subconscious mind and my conscious mind. I have learnt numerous ideas about my subconscious mind and how I can program it. The subconscious mind is different from the conscious mind in that, the conscious mind can select options and make choices, eliminating the unwanted options. The subconscious mind however, always agrees with what the conscious mind tells it and moves in the direction in which the conscious mind will be leading it.
My subconscious mind faithfully carries out the suggestions I consciously give to it. The idea has made me aware that I should never select negative data and feed it into my subconscious mind if I want to succeed in life.

Knowing how the subconscious mind works in relation to the conscious mind is making me careful not to worry unnecessarily and to avoid negative thoughts which will make negative impressions in my subconscious mind.

The idea will assist me towards my goal of a healthy body as I feed and suggest positive words of healing into my subconscious mind. This idea also revealed to me how I can liken the relationship between the subconscious mind and the conscious mind to a “horse” and its “rider”. The horse is the subconscious mind and the rider is the conscious mind. My subconscious mind (horse) will carry the conscious mind (rider) wherever he directs the horse. It is the duty therefore, of my conscious mind to teach my subconscious mind new positive ideas concerning my goal of the healing of my condition.

Fake it till you become it
This idea really inspired me. Through practicing this idea I have become what I have been faking. For example, I never used to be a person who smiles easily, but by using one of the techniques I read in the book, I have from time to time been looking at myself in the mirror and smile. This has worked for me wonderfully and I am slowly becoming the smiling image I see in the mirror. I am also learning to smile at people as I greet them or talk to them. I have also created an image of the healthy person I want to be and I am keeping my imagination active by constantly thinking about that image and everything that I do, I do it as if I am already that healthy image that I have created. Since my subconscious can not tell the difference between the truth and something imagined, I know that it will eventually agree with the picture of who I want to be. As my subconscious perceives the image I have created of my “new” me, it acts upon it as a real experience.

What you believe conditions what you can do
This idea is important to me as I have had an experience of it in my life. It has helped me to revisit and change my past beliefs which have been limiting me. When I was growing up, the belief impressed upon me was that I was poor, an orphan who could never make it in life. My beliefs which are my inner world brought about the results of poverty in my life. The state of poverty lived with me for so many years of my life before I made a decision to change my belief to that of “I am not poor, being an orphan does not mean I have to be poor.” I began to challenge my false belief and started to create a new self-image and change my personal belief to that of being a successful person. I began to work and at the same time advancing my studies which I had only left at the Ordinary Level. I got a well paying job and my life began to change from failure to success.

Stress is a habit you can change
Stress is my response to external stimulus. Stress is a very dangerous condition which can inhibit the immune system. I can beat stress by the way I respond to the external stimulus. As an example, one day I could not find my flash disk which I usually keep in the side pocket of my bag. I searched through the entire bag but could not find it. A thought came to me telling me that I had left it in the car the last time I had used it. However, at that particular moment I was far away from my car. I chose to believe the thought and stopped the search. I also withheld the feeling of having lost something precious until I had arrived where the car was (I had left it at home). Even when I got home, I still delayed the response by doing other things and ignoring the issue of the flash. In the evening when I now got into the car wanting to go somewhere I found the flash in the flash player I had last played a week ago. By delaying the response of the external stimulus i.e. the feeling of losing something, I was able to manage stress.

Stress like any other habit can be unlearned. Stress if allowed can lead to sickness. In order to change the stress habit, I must be fully motivated to change. I must weigh and think through the advantages I will gain by breaking the habit.

This idea has also helped me in my work related issues where whenever I had a difficult issue with either my boss or subordinate, I would over respond, personalize the issues, blaming myself and would at times fail to sleep pondering over such issues. Through Psycho-Cybernetics I have managed stress by sowing SEEDS to change the stress habit. I now view situations as being neutral, I have stopped blaming myself for a problem, matching my emotions with my evaluation, doing something to correct the situation and having a feeling of increased self-esteem after I have done something to correct the situation.

Emotional scars cut you off from living
Emotional scars develop as a result of childhood abuse by parents, brothers, sisters, relatives or teachers. Abuse misinforms us about our identity and our values and recovery is the restoration of our true self. My childhood abuse as an orphan was being looked down upon by uncaring relatives. Being told that I could not further my education because I had no father to sponsor me that I should find a job and help educate my siblings since I was the elder child. My emotional wound became “I am poor, no one loves or cares for me, I am a failure”. Before I read Psycho-Cybernetics I was responding to this wound through anger, emotional withdrawal and aggressiveness.

I am still in the process of freeing my personality from this emotional wound by:-
a. Choosing not to live with the emotional wound.
b. I am taking action spiritual toward healing my wound by meditating on the love of God and His Word.
c. I am erasing old negative tapes by CANCELing them and replacing them with new positive data “I am a new creation in Christ, old things are passed away, all things have become new.
d. I have come up with a program of daily relaxation, reading of the Word of God and meditation.
e. I now have a mirror on my office desk which I make a point of looking at frequently, smiling each time until it has become a habit.
f. Everytime I think of the people who brought the emotional wound, I forgive them so that I do not harbor grudges

A positive self-image equals longevity.
At one time in my life because of illness, I lost sense of purpose for living and I almost cut my life short. This idea is therefore helping me in developing a healthy self-image and I now have the belief that I will live long. I am looking forward to a bright future filled with joy, peace, health and strength. Everyday I am expectant of a joyful and better tomorrow. As a Christian, the Word of God tells me that God will satisfy me with a long life; therefore I live my life with this expectation in my mind.

The idea has also helped me to take charge of my life and having a feeling of being in control. My sense of purpose for living has been restored. I have therefore, put in place for myself long range plans to help me look forward to the future because there are so many things that I must accomplish.

3. How will these ideas help you in a practical way, both in your daily, personal life and in helping you to create a better world?

By changing my self-image from that of a sickling to that of a healthy person, I will practically become it. I will live a healthy life daily. I will not be a bother to other people requiring their attention most of the times. My new self-image will help me create a better world by helping others who may find themselves in the same situation I was in.

By having an understanding of my two minds i.e. the subconscious and the conscious, I will be able to guard against negative ideas which discourage the development of a positive self-image. This idea will help me create a better world by how I relate with other people having a positive self-image. By allowing myself to be my true self, I allow others also to be their true selves. This idea will help me to accept other people as they are not according to how I want them to be.

The idea of “fake it till you become it” helps me in a practical way daily, because it has a bearing on my imagination. My imagination is something I use on a daily basis. The idea will help me create a better world by giving me the opportunity to practice new traits and attitudes to relate with my world. This mental practice will help me to be a perfect personality to my world.

The idea of “what you believe conditions what you can do” helps me in a practical way daily and personally in that I have to be on the watch out for what I will decide to believe. It is also helping to change my past negative beliefs. The idea helps me create a better world by doing those things that I never dreamt of. It will also help me to improve the lives of others through what I can do because of what I have believed.
The idea “stress is a habit you can change” will practically help me to manage stress on a daily basis. By managing my stress, I will develop myself into an effective personality who is able to interact well with others.

The process of freeing myself from emotional wounds will make me a person who does not hold grudges. This process will enable my rider to give the horse the message “I forgive” moving it away from the path of resentment and anger.

Having a positive self-image lengthens my life. The process of creating a positive self-image of myself as a healthy personality is practically helping me daily. Although some negative thoughts and ideas I used to have in the past occasionally come to my mind, I am refusing to dwell on them. I cancel them and replace them with positive thoughts. Thoughts of sickness can continue to dominate my thinking if I don’t replace them with the true positive thoughts of healing. The Word of God says, “As a man thinks so is he.”

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

“The time to worry about a decision is before you make it”

It is important to fully consider and understand all the possible factors to a situation before making a decision. It may not be wise to make quick decisions at times without considering the long term outcome. I must therefore give myself enough time to make the right decision. There is need to carefully define the problem before a decision can be made. If it is a decision of the purchase of a major household item, there is need to compare prices, quality, warranties, after sales service e.t.c. There is also need to ask the right questions and get the right answers about the product. Once all the information required is available, making the right decision will be easy. Worrying because you made a wrong decision in the item to purchase will not help in any way.

“The only way people can push your buttons is when you let them”

What I have learnt in life is that there will always be people to try and push your buttons. However, I have also learnt that it is a waste of time and energy to be angry over these “button pushers”. As a student who has read Psycho-Cybernetics, I must learn how to deal with button pushers and not allow myself to be angered by them. Button pushers are people who like to anger, stress or frustrate other people. However, if I do not let them, they will not be able to. This idea helps me to personally deal with my brother who whenever he gets drunk tries to push my buttons by speaking negative things. I have therefore made a decision to ignore his negative talk and not answer him, refusing to handle what he brings.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

This quote is important to me in that it lets me understand that no matter how big the change I want to make in my life, it starts with only one step of action that I will take. In many instances in my job whenever, I get difficult reports to write, all it has taken is a single step of starting a background and all the other issues would just be falling into place.

“No one is immune to…negative feelings and attitudes…The important thing is to recognize them for what they are, and take positive action to correct the course”.

This quote makes me realize that negative feelings and attitudes will always be a part of my life. However, I should see them as such and not allow them to take root in my life by taking positive corrective action to fix them. There is a saying which goes, “You can not prevent a bird from flying over your head, but you can prevent it from building its nest there.” I must therefore build a strong mental foundation to prevent negative feelings and attitudes from taking root. I have learnt that negative feelings and attitudes cause me to make the most out of situations. I do not allow the feelings and attitudes to defeat me. Whenever I am faced with a negative situation, I must be able to know how to respond in a positive way. Negative feelings are passing feelings which I acknowledge as they are.

“Old emotional scars cannot be doctored or medicated”.

I have discovered through my study of Psycho-Cybernetics that the only remedy to old emotional scars is forgiveness. Forgiveness is like writing off a debt. I must forgive a person and treat them as though they never hurt me. This idea helped me to forgive my relatives who inflicted me with emotional wounds during my childhood days. Not only did I forgive them, I now also relate with them with love. I have also learnt to forgive myself as I have realized that there is nothing I can do about my past failures which are now water under the bridge.

“Happiness is a mental habit which can be cultivated”

Happiness is a good thing to have in life. I love being a happy person and I myself can make it happen in my life. Happiness makes me feel that I am human. To cultivate a culture of happiness therefore, there is need for me to build a strong mental foundation which is able to prevent negative emotions from taking control of my life. I must know how to deal with negative emotions when they come. I must be careful how I react to circumstances. I am in control of my thoughts and emotions.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

I fully understood the book and agreed with all the ideas.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

Yes the book contained some exercises in the form of questionnaires and check lists which I enjoyed doing, completing all of them. These exercises were very helpful to me such that after I had gone through the book I was a changed person in terms of improvement of my self-image, my self esteem and my attitude towards life. The book is a practical guide to a positive self-image.

Success Through Positive Mental Attitude
Assessment by Charity Masuka (Zimbabwe)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The main idea that the author conveys in this book is how Success Through Positive Mental Attitude can help one to rid their mind of cobwebs and make their thoughts clean. How to be focused on a definite goal, how to achieve it and how to maintain it through positive thinking and a positive attitude. The author Alexander Lockhart says, “A positive attitude is like a fire. Unless you continue to add fuel, it goes out. The fire must therefore be kept burning by using self motivators. Success does not only deal with physical matters but also involves our mentality.

2. What are the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. We translate into physical reality the thoughts and attitudes which hold in our minds.

In the past before I had read books which teach on a positive mental attitude, anytime I would entertain thoughts of fear, especially concerning a health condition, those thoughts would manifest themselves into sicknesses. Studying Success through PMA has made me a fearless giant. I have learnt to cast out thoughts of fear when they come and the result has been strength and courage.

I have since created an image of myself being a very healthy person and I am very excited about it, thanking God for this image everyday. I am translating this thought into physical reality through daily meditation on the image I have set for myself.

I have learnt that thoughts are seeds that when planted and nurtured, will grow. I have also learnt that thought is energy which cannot be lost but has to be stored somewhere (subconscious). I now know that negative thoughts make me sick and positive thoughts restore me to health.

ii. Success is maintained by those who keep trying with PMA.

At times in life when we fail, through Negative Mental Attitude (NMA), we think that it is the end, yet with PMA when we fall, we must rise up dust ourselves and continue with our journey. This idea has made me aware that no matter how many times I fail, I am still the most important living person and I can not be defeated. I have learnt that every downturn is normally followed by an upturn. Keeping a PMA helps me to manage life’s challenges with my emotions controlled. I am therefore disciplining myself, keeping my attention controlled and to remain focused on my image.

For the past two years my place of work has been going through financial difficulties so that we have been getting meager allowances for a living. When this phase began, I received it with a negative mental attitude which resulted in my being stressed up and ended up being sick almost to the point of death. It is when I changed my attitude to a positive one that I survived.

iii. I am the most important living person with a PMA.

The realization that I am the most important living person means that I can not be a failure. I am a very special and unique person and I was born a champion. Victory is built into me. This idea has awakened the giant within me so that I am now venturing in things I never imagined I could do.

iv. Clear cobwebs from your thinking

This idea has helped me to clear negative thoughts from my mind, replacing them with positive ones. At one time my mind became so muddled up with negative thoughts so that my memory and concentration began to suffer. I am being helped to clear cobwebs from my thinking by applying the principle of canceling negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones I learnt from Psycho Cybernetics 2000. I am also learning not to find faults only in people around me but also to see the good in them.

v. Often what we read and profess becomes a part of our libraries and our vocabularies instead of becoming a part of our lives.

This idea is very true and it has helped me to put into action all I read. In the past I had read so many books on healing, having a very big library but my health challenge was not improving because I was not practicing what I was reading. It is only when I began to put into action what I was reading that I began to see an improvement in my health.

vi. Never underestimate the value of a book.

Self help inspiring books, especially the Bible and the books I have read so far in my IIGL course have had tremendous impact on my life. Through this course I have realized that books are important and they help me to amass vast knowledge. My life has been transformed, and I have now developed a positive mental attitude. I now know not only how to read a book, but how to be read by the book. Following instructions and acting on ideas in books of healing and PMA I am now in the process of actualizing my total health. There is awesome power in books.

vii. Happiness begins at home

It is true that happiness just as charity begins at home since that is where we spent most of our lives. Through PMA, I have learnt to accept and love everyone at home the way they are. I used to have a NMA towards my brother each time he would argue with our mother over something. I tended to always support our mother and always found myself in a compromised relationship with my brother having taken the issue to be mine. Thank God for PMA, now whenever they argue, I remove myself from the scene or if I can’t, I look at the issue and my brother with a positive mental attitude. I now focus on what matters and stay as positive as is possible. Through PMA, I now have understanding relationships at home and whenever I am away from home, I am eager to go back because there is happiness.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so how?

Having a positive mental attitude means that my thoughts that will be translated into reality in my life will be good ones and this will have a positive impact on the world around me.

Through positive mental attitude, I will be helped to continue being focused on my goal even when challenges come along the way.

These ideas will also help me to watch out for the thoughts that I entertain, by clearing my mind from all negative thoughts.

I will no longer take any book that I read for granted but value every book and try by all means to act on what it teaches.

The ideas in Success through Positive Mental attitude have not been beneficial to me alone, but I have also used them to encourage others when they face challenges in life.

4. Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

i. “Every adversity has the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit for those who have PMA”

The health challenge which I had which almost took my life was an adversity. However, through PMA I have since recognized a seed of a greater benefit in that challenge. This adversity became a wake up call to reexamine the course of my thoughts, actions and attitudes. My prayer life is improved, my self talk as well as my confessions has improved. The fear of death has been removed and I now know how to keep myself free from sickness.

ii. “If a man is right, his world will be right”

A man is not made to be in a vacuum, but to interact with the world around him. If he is right, the way he interacts with the world will be right. Challenges of the world will be bread to him. He will be able to challenge the problems of the world. I have made myself right through PMA and therefore my world is right. Whenever I am faced with a situation, I boldly declare with emotion that “all things are working together for my good” and sure enough things will be working out together for my good.

iii. “Truth is truth and is not false regardless of his lack of knowledge or understanding”

Going back to my health challenge again, the truth that God has already made provision for my healing remained true and still remains true regardless of whether I knew about it or not. The word of God says “I am the Lord who heals you” and my not understanding this truth did not make it a lie. This truth is still the same it has not changed, it is forever settled. It is I who has the obligation to understand and believe in that truth.

iv. “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, the mind of man can achieve with PMA”

The moment I conceived in my mind and believed that God is my healer and that He heals every sickness and every disease I began to see an improvement in my health. I have developed a PMA that God loves me in the same way that He loves those He has healed of the same ailment as mine. That He is not a respecter of persons. I see myself experience total health for the rest of my life.

v. “Anything in life worth having is worth working for”

My health challenge has made me realize that in life, health is worth having even before you can have money. Because when you have money without health, you will only spend that money on medical bills. I have gone the extra mile by waking up earlier meditation on the word of God on the subject of healing and on the image of myself totally healed, I have a twice a day program of saying affirmations of healing
and I read and study a lot on the subject.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

No

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them useful?

Yes the book contained plenty of very useful exercises which I tried
to the best of my knowledge to complete.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions?

Yes I just have one more idea which was important to me that I would like to add the 7 ideas that are in question 2. This idea is “share with others a part of what you possess that is good and desirable” This idea is helping me to share every inspirational book, material, tape with others especially my fellow Christians. I have also become a spiritual mentor to young men and women by sharing with them my experiences. I used to be very stingy with my reading materials but Success through Positive Mental Attitude has changed my story.

Keys to Success
Assessment by Charity Masuka (Zimbabwe)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The author is trying to convey the idea of how one can lead an all-round successful life through the practical application of seventeen principles. Napoleon outlines each principle and how to apply it through examples. It is about examining established habits and teaching ways of changing them.

2. What are the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

i. Develop definiteness of purpose

This is the starting point of all achievements in life, where one should have a desirable outstanding goal to show where one is going. I thank God that I started reading this book when I was already applying this principle. My definite purpose is to be completely healed of a condition that the medical profession claim can not be cured. This book has shown me practical ways of achieving my goal.

ii. Use applied faith

The author makes it clear that applied faith is an action or habit of applying faith in all circumstances. Faith may be in God, in oneself, or in another. Applied faith makes me realize that there is a greater Mind in whom I must put my trust in. I connect myself to this greater Mind through prayer, meditation and thinking.

Faith must always be accompanied by works as the Bible says that faith without works is dead. This idea has impressed upon me the need to exercise my faith in everything I do. I have also learnt from the Bible that without faith it is impossible to please God,

Faith in God and His word has made my mind to be positive and free from the limitations of doubt, discouragement procrastination.

iii. Controlled attention

This idea has helped me to keep my mind on those things that I want to achieve and off those things I don’t want in my life. I have learnt to keep my mind focused on the total health I am expecting to have. By doing this I am conditioning my subconscious mind to act upon that purpose. I am daily feeding my mind with thoughts from the word of God on healing and these thoughts will produce what I desire which is the complete healing of my body. I have not been allowing my mind to linger on negative thoughts that will produce sickness, a result I don’t desire.

iv. Build Positive Mental Attitude

A positive mental attitude (PMA) is the right, honest, constructive thought action. This idea helps me to understand that I have control over my mental attitude. A positive mental attitude attracts success to me and a negative mental attitude brings about failure. PMA says “it can be done” and a negative mental attitude (NMA) says “it can’t be done”. By this idea I now believe that what the medical profession said can not be cured, can be cured. Through PMA, I now express in daily prayer my gratitude to God for the health I have already, and for His faithfulness to His word with tells me that He is the Lord who heals us and that He heals all diseases.

Through PMA I have also been able to deal with issues concerning my job. For example at my work place I used to have a benefit of fuel for transport. This benefit was suddenly removed and I now find myself having to, at times, commute to work and walking a long distance from the commuter drop off point to my office. Through PMA however, I don’t view this walking as a burden but as exercise that my body requires.

v. Enforce self-discipline

This is a process that ties together all my efforts of controlling my mind, my emotions, and my personal initiative and also in controlling my enthusiasm. This idea is important to me in that it helps me to be in control of myself and not allow others to control me. It helps me to think and reason first before I act in case I act in the wrong way. In the past I have been prey to uncontrolled emotions of anger which made me to have a life full of regrets. It is through self discipline that I can maintain the good habits I have established. To get to the stage I am right now with my definite purpose, I have not allowed people to know my thoughts lest they discourage me. I am jealously protecting my inner self.

vi. Learn from adversity and defeat

Every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit for those with PMA. This statement has been most inspiring to my life, from the previous book “Success through PMA to “Keys to Success” I have been coming across it. I have faced defeat in the past in my health, to the extent of almost dying. However, this has been a stepping stone as I rose up and faced it with PMA. It has become a wake up call for me to reexamine my life and my behaviors. The defeat has become a blessing in disguise for me because I am now becoming a teacher of the good news of a God who can heal all diseases. I now have a better knowledge of who God is to me and what He can do for me in the area of health.

vii. Maintain sound health

This has been the most important idea in my study as it makes me realize that I am a mind with a body and therefore as I think in my mind so am I in my body. The health of my mind and body can not be separated. Sickness, aches and pains are brought about in my mind and can be brought to leave by my mind as well, because whatever my mind can create in thought, it can create in reality.

Therefore for me to maintain a PMA, and develop a healthy mind and body, I must be able to conquer emotions like fear and anxiety since what the mind focuses on, it is also able to bring into existence. I thank God that this principle applies to my definite goal and that it has helped me to conquer fear of death and anxiety. By this idea, I have also learnt to live a balanced life. I never used to follow work with play or to follow mental exercise with physical exercise but this idea is helping me I now give my mind a chance to relax and play

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so how?

Definiteness of purpose – this idea has helped me to realize that if I want to be successful in life, I must have at any given time a definite major goal to achieve, and not just to live life anyhow. I have also learnt that I must remain focused on this goal until its fulfillment. The idea will help to create a better world in that once I accomplish a goal; I am in a better position to help others who may want to achieve that same goal.

Applied faith – This idea will enhance my trust in God who is the ultimate giver of all things. The Universal Mind with whom nothing is impossible. This idea gives me confidence towards the achievement of my goal through the realization that God is helping me. My own trust in the Infinite Intelligence and the results that will come as a result of this trust will cause people around me to also have confidence in God. Applied faith will mean that I will need to pray morning and evening to God for help in the achievement of my goal.

Controlled attention – This idea will help me to remain focused on my goal and to cast out of my mind every negative thought which tries to come to my mind which is contrary to what I am expecting since I reproduce in myself and my circumstance the thoughts of my mind. Controlled attention therefore provides me with the platform upon which I can change negative thoughts.

Build a PMA – Building a PMA helps me to go through the journey of life and its challenges with my emotions under control. By building PMA, I remain focused on achieving my goal no matter the challenges I may encounter along the way. I will create a better world by building a positive mental attitude because although I may be facing challenges in my situation, it will not show. I will still be reflecting an attractive personality through my reactions to other individuals. I thank God for this course that I am taking, because it is helping me to adjust my attitude to a positive one.

Enforce self discipline – Self discipline will help me in a practical way to be in charge of my thoughts and my actions. I will create a better world by acting with wisdom. The word of God will play a very important role in directing my thoughts and actions.

Learn from Adversity and defeat – This idea is helping me in a practical way to understand that any attack or any lingering symptom of the condition does not mean that I am failing. I must continue with my affirmation “Day by day, in every way by the grace of God, I am getting better and better” until the affirmation is accepted by my subconscious and transformed into reality. This idea will help me to prevent future attacks and ensure myself of an excellent state of health in both my mind and my body.

Maintain sound health – This idea lets me know that the power to generate sound health is within me – in my mind. If my within is in a state of decay, it will eventually show on the outside. Once my mind has the right, undisturbed, not subject to change positive idea of sound health, it clears illness. This idea practically helps me to have a will power to keep my body under repair through positive thinking as the Bible says, “As a man thinks, so is he”. So if I think myself “healed” then I am free from sickness. This idea is helping me practically because I have begun to notice a change in my body where symptoms are disappearing and I am gaining the weight I had lost although I am not on any medication.

4. Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

i. Pg 4: “If you can see an opportunity as quickly as you can see the faults of others, you will soon succeed.”

Most of the times we tend to focus on the faults of others instead of focusing on opportunities that may come up in our lives. Having a PMA helps us not to focus on other people’s faults. Paying attention to other people’s faults causes us to miss on opportunities that may come our way. I must be using the time that I focus on other people to search for more ideas on how to achieve my goal because finding fault in others does not add any value to the achievement of my goal.

ii. Pg 6: “Any dominating idea, plan or purpose held in your subconscious mind through repeated effort and emotionalized by a burning desire for its realization is taken over by the subconscious and acted upon through whatever natural and logical means that may be available”

This idea is important to me because for me to achieve the total health I desire, I must continue to have the dominating idea of someone who is totally free from sickness – healed; and for this to take effect in my life, I must think over this idea over and over again until it takes root and begins to manifest like it is now doing in my body.

iii. Pg 48 “It is impossible to have active, applied faith without a positive definite belief in a Supreme God

Without belief, nothing is accomplished. It is important in my path towards the achievement of my goal to believe in what the Higher Mind says. I must believe that whatever goal I have set for myself is possible with God. It is also important for me to believe that if anyone has been healed of the same ailment I desire to be healed from, I too can be healed. There is nothing too hard for the Supreme God to do. I can only gain such belief through prayer, meditation on the word of God, thinking and contemplating on my relationship with the Supreme God.

iv. Pg 67 “If you render extra service unwillingly or resentfully, you will probably get nothing back”

When you render extra service unwillingly, most of the times it means you are being forced to do it and it will be like a punishment. Firstly you will not be able to offer quality service because you are just doing it for the sake of doing it. Secondly there will be no tangible good result of the extra mile you have gone. You will not get positive feedback or a raise from rendering the service. It is therefore better not to go the extra mile when you are not willing.

v. Pg 95 “Every thought you release comes back to you in a multiplied state.

Thoughts are seeds and in the same way that one seed of corn is sown, and it comes back as a bountiful harvest, so does also the seed of thought. Therefore one negative thought of fear I sow in respect of my situation, will return to me in a multiplied state of more negative thoughts and I believe this must have triggered the attack on my health. I had negative thoughts of fear of illness.

vi. Pg 125 “….your thoughts have power”

It is true that my thoughts indeed have power. If they can create things into reality it means power must be involved for this creation to take place. For there can not be creation without power.

vii. Pg 128 “Newspapers, gossip and rumor are unreliable sources from which to procure facts

This is very true because newspapers are in the business of making money and they don’t care whether what they are publishing is true fact or not. Rumors also are not to be relied on because they may not be true fact. Someone can just wake up one day and give a false statement on a particular issue and begins to spread it and it goes around as rumor. I have practically experienced it in my work place as the organization is in the process of carrying out a retrenchment program. All sorts of rumors have been going around for almost three months, but nothing tangible concerning those rumors has materialized. Because of this therefore, I have made a decision not to listen to any such rumors. I have done away with the habit of believing on the basis of little or no evidence. With gossip, I often ask people who gossip about other people’s issues whether they themselves where at the scene of the happenings and they say no. Yet the way they will be speaking would be like they were at the scene.

viii. Pg 142 “Your enthusiasm for something automatically leads to your concentrating your attention on it”

This idea is true to my definite goal. I have cultivated so much enthusiasm to become whole such that one minute does not go by without me thinking of myself as being healed. This has also gone to the extent that I now often hear a voice from within me saying “you are healed”.

ix. Pg 180 “Repeating a fear over and over in your mind makes you more susceptible to the things you fear”

The Bible in the book of Job lets us know that those things that Job feared came to pass in his life. This statement is also true in my situation. For a long time I entertained thoughts of fear of becoming ill, the fear of death and negative thoughts of past behaviors and eventually these fears manifested themselves in my body and I became ill.

x. Pg 202 “…..cosmic habit force always operates. If your habits are negative, their results will also be negative”

Habits need to be controlled through self discipline. I must therefore be very careful of the dominating mental habits I allow to linger around my life. Habits become a part of my nature through repetition. As part of my plan in achieving my goal, I am developing a habit of saying out aloud positive affirmations of healing accompanied with emotion. This is done twice a day, in the morning as soon as I wake up and at night before I go to bed. This strategy has already started working wonders for me.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

Yes. On page 40 under “Emotional Control” and on the seven positive emotions, I fee that joy should have been included as one of the emotions that have a bearing on our lives. Being always joyful is one of the ways that we can use to manage our emotions. By being a joyful person, you allow yourself to feel painful emotions just long enough to learn from them rather than remain in pain for long.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them useful?

Yes the book contained exercises which I tried to the best of my knowledge to complete being honest with myself. The exercises helped me to discover my true self.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions?

I thank God for the life of the Napoleon Hills the author of this book. This book has been a great inspiration to me. The book came into my life at the right time to help me address the goal I had already started to work on.
