Here are some highlights:

Beliefs and religion should not matter when you want to show love or assist others.

Mother Teresa’s acts of charity were not limited to the Christians only with whom she shared her religion and belief. She saw God in everyone and that motivated her to share love and compassion to everyone no matter the background. The book mentions how, in her House of Dying, everyone who would enter would be asked of their religion. Not so that they could be discriminated against, but so that when they passed on they could get a burial aligned with their beliefs. Any rites and dietary requirements where also followed according to the religion and beliefs of the people. Often times I find it easier to relate to and interact with those who share my beliefs. Sometimes it is because it then is effortless to explain my way of worship or prayer

Love can break barriers. Mother Teresa managed to set up her houses even in areas which had high conflicts. She managed to set up houses in regions were Christianity was not accepted. It seems her prayers, interest in people as humans and her gifts of the medals, broke barriers which would have been termed impossible to break. This is mainly attributed to the fact that what she offered was love.

Selflessness and humility. Mother Teresa was very considerate of others especially the poorest of the poor. She thrived to show them love and give them dignity in their last days on earth. Her humility was reflected in her giving service and carrying out her chores with her sisters even though her status had grown and she was a Nobel Prize Winner and honorary graduate from a number of universities. She consistently displayed humility by taking on the task of cleaning toilets. It is a reminder for me to not be attached to a status or title or qualifications.

Everyone deserves to be loved. There are cases/stories in the book where ordinarily it would seem understandable to turn someone away or to begrudge them of the wrong they have done but Mother Teresa and her sisters do not seem to turn anyone away no matter the background. The case of the robber who held one of the sisters at knife point is most striking to me. Instead of being negative or hostile the sister went on to be thoughtful and add cutlery to the food they had packed for the robber. She also managed to preach of God’s forgiveness to the robber. The message seems to have struck the robber as he then assisted in mending the door he had broken down when he entered to carry out the robbery. I need to be kinder to the individuals who have done obvious wrongs whether it is to me, to those I love or to others in general. I tend to “cancel” or blacklist people whom I have judged to be hateful, inconsiderate and cruel.

I have been privileged to be alive in the same era a saint was alive. I have witnessed through the book how the simple actions of following through your beliefs in good deeds and in paying attention to those in need can make a huge impact on people across religions, races and beliefs through Mother Teresa. I have seen how having influence and using it positively can better the lives of thousands, if not hundreds of people. I want to be that person who does her best to create similar impact in my sphere of influence. I am motivated to accelerating the restarting of the project I was engaged in which focuses on philanthropic activities. I am inspired to give love.

(Cheu is the IIGL Corresponding Secretary and a Level Six Student).

What Others Are Saying

Why IIGL?

Andras Nevai (Hungary)

andras@divineimagist.com

My Family Foundation always looked for those Nonprofit Organizations that had the greatest impact and did the most good for the greatest number.
