Below are some highlights:

Start with the Heart: Conversely, when people aren’t involved, when they sit back quietly during touchy conversations, they’re rarely committed to the final decision. Since their ideas remain in their heads and their opinions never make it into the pool, they end up quietly criticizing and passively resisting. This is the first principle of dialogue: Start with Heart. That is, your own heart.

As the mediator in my family, I always do my best to be open to hear each party involved and try to be objective in not letting my feelings get in the way, this has helped resolve complex issues between my siblings, my mom, and now its extending to my nieces and nephew. Managing my emotions allows me not get manipulated by any of my siblings who is try to gain an advantage over the other. By starting with our own heart, we lay the groundwork for building connections, resolving conflicts, and promoting understanding in various personal and professional relationships. People who are skilled at dialogue do their best to make it safe for everyone to add their meaning to the shared pool even ideas that at first glance appear controversial, wrong, or at odds with their own beliefs. Now, obviously they don’t agree with every idea; they simply do their best to ensure that all ideas find their way into the open.

At the end of the day, what qualifies people to be called “leaders” is their capacity to influence others to change their behavior in order to achieve important results. Nothing fails like success. In other words, when a challenge in life is met by a response that is equal to it, you have success. But when the challenge moves to a higher level, the old, once successful response no longer works; it fails; thus, nothing fails like success.

At this point, you could be tempted to water down your content. “You know it’s really not that big a deal.” Don’t give into the temptation. Don’t take back what you’ve said. Instead, put your remarks in context.

As much as others may need to change, or we may want them to change, the only person we can continually inspire, prod, and shape with any degree of success is the person in the mirror.

“Conversely, when people aren’t involved, when they sit back quietly during touchy conversations, they’re rarely committed to the final decision. Since their ideas remain in their heads and their opinions never make it into the pool, they end up quietly criticizing and passively resisting.” This phrase is important to me because it emphasizes active participation and contribution in discussions and decision-making processes. It highlights how individuals who remain silent during important conversations may not feel truly committed to the outcomes because their perspectives and ideas are not shared and considered.

For instance, family discussions are usually very touchy, I try as much as possible to involve all my siblings and ensure they share their thoughts on what ever discussion we are having. Early this year when we need to install a solar energy system for my mom, I ensure each of my 4 sisters were actively participating in the conversation, at the end we bought the one suggested by one of my sisters, the amazing thing was that everyone was satisfied with the what we achieved.

While I may not consistently excel in communication, and dialogues may not always unfold as intended, I am committed to continual self-assessment and enhancement of my conversational aptitude. I aim to educate others on the advantages of establishing an inclusive space where individuals are encouraged to express their thoughts openly. It is my firm belief that through this dedication, I can contribute to the creation of a more harmonious environment.

(Udeme is a Level Four Student and is the IIGL incoming Board Vice President).

What Others Are Saying

Lynda Eze (Nigeria/USA)

Uniqueuju91@gmail.com

Why IIGL?

My name is Lynda Eze and I am a registered nurse from Nigeria. I currently live and work in the USA. I joined IIGL approximately 12 years ago as a Freshman in school. I must say it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

IIGL helped me commit to personal growth and development. It allowed me to surround myself with individuals from different parts of the world who are also dedicated to personal development and making impacts in their various communities through working on different projects.

One of my favorite books I read in IIGL is “As a Man Thinketh” by James Allen. The book truly changed everything for me! After reading that book which is one of the first books IIGL shares with each student when you join, I made the commitment to graduate from IIGL and apply whatever I learned in my life.

I believe IIGL is one of the best platforms out there that will help anyone. It is completely tuition free. If you are on the fence about joining IIGL, know that it will really help you tremendously.

Thank you IIGL for continuing to make this platform available to anyone around the world! I hope that many more people can benefit from it!

(Lynda is an IIGL Graduate and the newly elected Board President.
