Our behavior results from our way of thinking as well as our sufferings and joy.

From this idea I got that our actions are never isolated, whatsoever we do is as a result of what we think. How we think and perceive things also results in our sorrows and joy.

ii. The soul attracts what it secretly conceals.

We attract things that we secretly think of, conceal and hold on to. After college I was so eager to begin the new chapter of my life as a young professional. However everytime I opened my self for possibilities and opportunities I always got the opposite of what I expected and after this book, I have realized that the things and opportunities I got and received were not foreign at all. They were everything I thought and wanted to be. From this I got that we have to be clear of our goal, what we want for our soul attracts that.

iii. What we experience does not define us, it reveals who we really are.

The different situations, good or bad that we find ourselves in do not define us, however they bring out what we really are. This idea is really important to me personally because it made me realize that the situations we find ourselves in help us uncover the people we are, how we react, how we act, all the little reactions are not separated. They are all we are, brought out by circumstances. Therefore we always have a choice and powerful of control over our actions.

iv. People would rather change their circumstances but never themselves.

It’s always easier to place blame on the situations we go through than to accept that we are at fault. Acceptance brings around the reality that we are wrong and need to improve, and thus it is not easy to take, we are usually vulnerable to what we think others will think of us when we make mistakes. We then fall victim to our thoughts and decide to work on the outside and not the inside. From this I got that, to be free we have to be willing to work on ourselves to improve, grow become better.

v. “So you will be what you will to be”
From this idea I understood that we are exactly what we think of ourselves. We are a product of our thoughts. Growing up I always wanted to lead, whether at church or at school. If we view ourselves as highly as this we become and vise versa.

vi. From our minds come our actions and behavior “make the fountain pure and all will be pure.”

From our mind comes every action and decision we make, for us to achieve, be happy and appreciate life and all around us, there is a need for us to cleanse our thoughts. When what we feed our mind is clean, “pure” we can only act and be of good “pure” character. Whatever thoughts we have results in the circumstances we face. Thoughts are thus powerful tools at our disposal to shape our realities. Positive thoughts produces positive results.

vii. Change begins with you

In the book Jonathan Seagull took it upon himself to discover how to fly, because of his curiosity and determination. Without a teacher or proper guidance he persevered through the different techniques he taught himself until he mastered his art. When his kind rejected him for being different he did it stop. However he took it upon himself to be the change and returned to teach those who were willing to learn and managed to get himself some who also wanted to learn to fly.

ii. Some circumstances are blessings in disguise

This idea is important to me because it helped me understand that we don’t always get the reaction we expect when we accomplish some things in our lives. Jonathan Seagull’s rejection and being labelled as an outcast proved to be the change he needed to continue his pursuit in self discovery. Personally I have stressed over rejection and cursed when things do not go my way, and thus failed to notice the good that always resulted. Not only did Jonathan Seagulls rejection lead him forward, it accelerated his ascents to the people destined to help him along his journey. Hence whatever circumstances that comes our way, we should be bold enough to accept the challenge and continue to aspire and endure.

iii. We can only ascend and become better if we are willing to learn and let go of our old ways of thinking

The author introduced Kirk Maynard Gull into the story when Jonathan Seagull had returned to his last Earth to show another way. Maynard Gull could not move one of his wings and asked for help. He was told that he had the freedom to be himself and with that he believed in himself and spread his wings and flew. I got that for me to become the best version of me I have to believe in my abilities a d work to areas attaining the results I want. To have the willingness to go beyond my doubts, fear and past experiences. To allow myself venture into new forms through acceptance of freedom and destruction of all limitations.

iv. The only limitations to our growth is not the people around us, but out thoughts.

This ideal is important to me because it challenged a lot of decisions I have made as a result of blaming people around me for my failures. I was ignorant to the fact that I was able to succeed. After reading the book, it is now clear that my growth does not depend on who is in my life, rather my mindset, my determination and how far I aspire to ascend. Just like how Fletcher Lynd Seagull accepted that he was always the one in control and found himself and finally understood the power of his thought and freedom.
v. Having different opinions does not make one very popular and liked. This idea highlighted that no matter how clear and straight forwards thing can be. Change is not easy to accept it. After Jonathan Seagull spent more time explaining and teaching other gulls about flight, their feat outweighed their curiosity. I got that people feel safe when they remain comfortable hence, comfort is the enemy of success, and that people are always afraid of that which they don’t understand, one can only show them the way, how they choose to proceed is their decision.

vi. After a year I discovered that all I had was just the foundation and that I still had a lot to learn, so as to keep up with the changing culture and trends. Just like how Jonathan Seagull continued to learn through his multiple ascension forms. Even when other gulls thought him to be the sun of the high gull himself, he continued to learn something new. From this ideal I learned that knowledge is limitless, we can never stop learning, there is always something to learn we just have to be open and willing to learn.

vii. Every individuals growth and path is different.

In the book, all the gulls that were able to ascend and master flying on the surface, they seemed the same, however they all had different personalities and aspirations (reasons for wanting to fly). As an aspiring young leader I used to think that every individual was the same and that they all wanted the same things in life. This idea made me understand that every individual is on a different path, and their growth is also different. Some attain their goals as quickly as they aspire to achieve, some take longer others go through the process alone, some have mentors, aids and guidance.

3. Meaning, having a strong sense of desire of something makes it possible to achieve that something. I understood that, desire used in the right way, motivates me to act, it energizes and fuels my need to achieve. This concept motivates me to focus on meaningful collaborations for growth, rather than competition. It brings to mind how often when in a crowd it’s easier to want to compete, as the idea points out, healthy relations result in growth. The authors’ ideal on auto-suggestion, which is a form of self-talk that can help one to focus on positive thoughts and goals. Positive thinking can impact one’s life, when one puts into consideration that our minds are powerful, so whatever one thinks can be achieved. It helps to heal, motivate and guide minds from poverty, sickness, fear to good health, success and courage. As an aspiring leader this idea motivated me to really take into consideration the way I speak to myself and how I use my mind for the betterment of my career and growth. So, for everything I plan to do, my mind will be my first playground for success because I can literally change my life through the power of positive thinking.

ii. Resilience

A lot of the stories in the book showed resilience, I was greatly moved by the story of Henry Ford. and the sales man who failed to sale his insurance and turned his bad experience into something positive. These stories were important as they highlight that it’s never about failing but about bouncing back from failure. They both could have easily given up but they chose to turn their failure into lessons and grew from them. Resilience is then can be learnt and developed over time, by learning from mistakes and focusing on the end goal when faced with challenges. From this ideal, its clear that failure is always going to be experienced, having the courage to continue and find the something more will determine my success.

iii. Persistence and perseverance

The story of Walter Lippmann was quite inspiring. He started small, humble and never gave up on his goal to become an editor. He went from writing biographies about celebrities to employing a small team of writers hence becoming the editor. This ideal is important as it hammers down the vitality of perseverance and persistence. No matter how far and distance a goal might seem, its clear now that all I have to do is to stay focused, and not be ashamed to start from the ground up. The story highlights that no job is too small in the pursuit of one’s goals.

iv. “If you have a problem that’s good.”

I think the idea here is to view problems as signs that one is trying something new and taking risks, leading to success and growth. This is important to me because it reminds me to approach problems with curiosity and a willingness to learn. Still on it, it encourages me to see failure from a positive perspective. The story of Alexander Graham Bell, really got to me as he was able to learn from others mistakes and found success with the telephone. He saw another mans failure as an opportunity to learn, adapt and try, and as a stepping stone. Hence, there is no success without failure. When one fails, there should be acceptance then one moves forward and tries again.

v. Choosing the right company

The author used the story of Ross Perot, a man who made poor choices of companions in his early years and however turned his life around when he went to prison. This story and idea were impactful to me as I learnt that it is crucial to have the right people in one’s life, to encourage, challenge and inspire one to be the best version of oneself. There is a saying that goes, “you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with,” with this statement in mind, having bad company can be detrimental to my success and growth. I used to have a tendency of clutching on to friends even when we outgrew each other, because I was more afraid of the change that came after than the damage, I was making to myself. However. It is clearer now that, for my growth and potential I need the best people in my corner, people who will push me, support, inspire and motivate me instead of the opposite.

vi. Having a growth mindset

This notion is important as it motivates me to want to learn, to be open to new ideas and knowledge. As a leader I think it’s essential to be willing to learn, listen and to gather as much knowledge as possible. Because learning is a catalyst for growth. Having a growth mindset helps expand one’s mind and creativity. Let’s say, in a group of different people, it’s always easier to dismiss other people’s opinions as a leader however from this idea, every person, book, experience and circumstance is an avenue for learning.

vii. The power of imagination and creativity

In the previous books we have read, the main idea the authors had in common was the power of the mind. In the current book, this ideal of imagination and creativity reveals that the mind is and will always be the most important tool a human has for his or her development and success. The authors used Ethan as an example of how one can face their demons and situations. The boy was being bullied and he used the power of his imagination and the lessons he got from his comic book hero to find strength and courage to overcome his obstacles. Personally, I got that for me to overcome, achieve succeed it starts with my imagination. I have the power to be that which I choose to be. When ever I’m faced with difficulties, conflicts or obstacles, I should be able to find the strength within me, and use all the lessons I am learning to build up the courage to be the hero in my own story. This ideal is important because it reveals that the only person who can save me, change me, and turn around any unwanted situations is me rather than being at the mercy of outside circumstances. I can be the heroine to my own story.

3. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The central idea Dale Carnegie conveys in How to Win Friends and Influence People is that true leadership and influence are rooted in understanding people, not controlling them. The book emphasizes that success in leadership, personal relationships, and professional life depends largely on how well we relate to others, communicate with empathy, and make people feel valued and respected.

The author argues that people are driven by emotions, ego, and the deep desire to feel important. Therefore, leaders who learn how to connect genuinely with others, appreciate their efforts, and communicate without criticism are far more effective than those who rely on authority, fear, or dominance. Influence, according to the author, is not about manipulation but about sincere interest in others, humility, and emotional intelligence. For me as an aspiring leader, this book shifted my understanding of leadership from being position-based to relationship-based. It made me realize that leadership is less about telling people what to do and more about creating an environment where people want to listen, contribute, and grow.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one, using personal examples from your own life.

i. Show Genuine Interest in Others

Leadership is fundamentally about relationships. When a leader shows genuine interest in people, they build trust, loyalty, and stronger teams. This principle stood out to me because it reminded me that people can easily sense when interest is forced or superficial.
Personally, I have noticed that when I truly listen to others without planning my response, conversations become more meaningful. In leadership spaces, especially community and youth development, people open up more when they feel seen and heard. This principle challenged me to move beyond polite listening and practice intentional presence.

ii. Give Honest and Sincere Appreciation

The book emphasizes that appreciation should be genuine, not flattery. Honest appreciation boosts morale, motivation, and confidence. This resonated deeply with me because I realized that I often appreciate people internally but fail to express it.
In leadership roles I’ve been part of, I’ve seen how a simple “thank you” or acknowledgment can change someone’s attitude entirely. This principle taught me that recognition costs nothing but creates immense value. As a leader, appreciating others sincerely creates a culture of encouragement and belonging.

iii. Avoid Criticism, Condemnation, and Complaints
This principle was challenging yet enlightening. Criticism often damages relationships, breeds resentment, and shuts down communication. Carnegie explains that even when people are wrong, harsh criticism rarely produces positive change.

I reflected on moments where criticism, even when justified, led to defensiveness rather than growth. This lesson taught me to focus on solutions instead of blame. In leadership, creating a safe environment for learning and improvement is more effective than pointing out faults harshly.

iv. Talk in Terms of the Other Person’s Interests

Great leaders communicate in ways that resonate with others, not just themselves. This principle taught me that influence increases when we understand what motivates people.
In my own life, I’ve noticed that when I frame ideas around shared goals or others’ interests, cooperation improves. This lesson is particularly important in leadership because people commit more when they feel their needs and values are acknowledged.

v. Smile and Be Approachable

This principle seems simple, yet it is powerful. A smile communicates warmth, openness, and approachability. As someone who can sometimes appear reserved, this reminded me that body language matters in leadership.
Approachability encourages open communication and trust. Leaders who appear welcoming make it easier for others to express ideas, concerns, and creativity. This principle taught me that leadership presence is not only verbal but also emotional and physical.

vi. Make the Other Person Feel Important

People want to feel valued. The book emphasizes that leaders should uplift others sincerely. This principle helped me understand that empowerment is a leadership responsibility.
When people feel important, they perform better, contribute more, and grow in confidence. I realized that leadership is not about elevating myself but about lifting others. This lesson aligns strongly with servant leadership, which I aspire to practice.

vii. Win People Over by Encouraging, Not Arguing

Persuasion is more effective than confrontation. The author explains that arguments rarely change minds; encouragement does. This principle taught me the power of empathy and patience.

In discussions or disagreements, I’ve learned that listening first and encouraging dialogue leads to better outcomes than trying to “win” an argument. Leadership influence grows when people feel respected, not overpowered.

3. How will these ideas help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you create a better world? If so, how?

These principles have practical applications in my daily life, leadership roles, and future aspirations. Personally, they help me improve communication, manage relationships better, and respond to conflict with maturity.

In leadership spaces, applying these lessons enables me to:
Build trust within teams
Encourage collaboration
Foster emotional safety
Inspire rather than command

On a broader level, leaders who practice empathy, appreciation, and understanding contribute to healthier communities.
